Vice President for Academic Affairs and Workforce Solutions

Purpose of Position: The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Workforce Solutions serves as the chief academic officer of the institution and provides administration leadership and operational management for the College’s academic and workforce areas. The Vice President directs strategic initiatives, long-range planning activities and program development for the academic and workforce areas of the College; fosters an environment that motivates faculty members and encourages innovative strategies for curriculum development and delivery; allocates resources, including faculty, staff, budgets, and space; and works collaboratively with others in the College, local businesses and industries, the Virginia Community College system, and the broader community to ensure continuous improvement of academic and workforce programs aligned with the College’s vision, mission, and strategic goals. The Vice President deeply values the engagement of faculty and academic leaders throughout the college/university in advancing a strategic vision and understands the role of academic leaders and decision-making processes in institutional transformation. The Vice President serves as an integral member of the president’s leadership team, working closely in conjunction with the remaining members to ensure harmonious and progressive leadership of the College. The Vice President works closely with deans and direct reports to ensure a college community focused on student development, learning, and success. The Vice President will apply targeted completion and retention strategies to strengthen enrollment in the service area.

Duties include oversight of planning, scheduling, implementation, and evaluation of all credit and non-credit courses and programs, academic support activities, and student services activities at the college. This includes the preparation, management, and analysis of instructional, student services, and selected grant budgets. Additionally, the VP works with the Virginia Community College System, local economic development groups, public schools, state and local agencies, accrediting agencies, other higher education institutions, and other stakeholders to fulfill the mission of the institution.

Required areas of knowledge and skill include:

  • Experience working directly with faculty and student services
  • Collaborative leadership style
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art teaching and learning techniques, including technological applications and distance learning
  • Excellent customer service skills that demonstrate the ability to work successfully with diverse individuals and groups
  • Successful experience working with workforce development, career and technical, transfer, and dual enrollment programs

Minimum qualifications include:

  • An earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution
  • Successful management and administrative experience in a higher education environment
  • Strategic planning and budgeting experience
  • Accreditation and curriculum development experience

Preferred qualifications:

  • Community college administration experience
  • 5 years of supervisory experience
  • 5 years of administrative experience, preferably at a community college
  • Successful experience with the institutional accreditation process
