Title: Assistant Dean (LGBTQAIP2+)





Position Purpose:

The Assistant Dean will be responsible for leading comprehensive and holistic support services and programming for LGBTQAIP2+ students. This hands-on position provides direct support for an increasingly diverse Bates College community utilizing excellent customer service skills. The Assistant Dean will develop, implement, and assess programming that addresses LGBTQAIP2+ student needs, interests, and concerns, with particular attention to the intersectionalities between LGBTQAIP2+ and BIPOC identities. Working collaboratively with other professional and student staff in the OIE, the Assistant Dean is charged with creating a holistic, student-centered environment that cultivates community and belonging, provides resources for students’ personal and academic success, and connects students to opportunities for campus engagement. Additional responsibilities include: supporting LGBTQAIP2+ identity-based student organizations; supervising SPARQ! Peer Mentors; and serving as a resource and partner for on-campus constituencies supporting LGBTQAIP2+ students and engaged in equity, anti-racism, intersectionality, and social justice work.

Job Duties:

• Develop, implement, and assess dynamic and holistic programming to foster a sense of community and belonging, facilitate student success, and assist in personal and academic development of LGBTQAIP2+ students, with particular attention to those with intersectional identities.
• Assure equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism as central to their work and the delivery of services to faculty, staff, and students.
• Support and collaborate with identity-based student organizations, with a focus on community-building programming, including periodic late-night and weekend events.
• Oversee the SPARQ! Peer Mentors program, including the training and supervision of the student mentors.
• Design, implement, and assess an ally training program, in collaboration with the Director of Equity and Inclusion Education.
• Build and nurture partnerships with offices across campus to advance our mission of having an inclusive campus for queer and trans students (i.e., Academic Affairs, Athletics, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Services, and Residence Life).
• Design and facilitate training for other Student Support Advisors to bolster inclusive advising practices.
• Partner with the Office of Campus Life to develop and facilitate orientations and leadership training (i.e., Bates Leads) for student leaders of identity-based organizations.
• Attend regular meetings with Campus Life staff to ensure holistic support to identity-based student organizations.
• Informally mentor and support LGBTQAIP2+ identified students.
• Be a visible and accessible presence in the OIE, including on nights and weekends as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Master’s degree required.

Experience

Minimum 4 years of relevant, progressive professional experience in student support, orientation, and higher education programming.

Expertise in the field of student affairs and student-facing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice work.

Experience and demonstrated success with:
Program design and implementation, with special emphasis on programs for LGBTQAIP2+ students;
Supporting, coaching, and advising students with a variety of identities and lived experiences;
Working with minoritized student populations, including LGBTQAIP2+ students; and
Crisis management.

Skills and Knowledge

Commitment to working with LGBTQAIP2+ students, their families, and campus support structures to facilitate their academic, co-curricular, and personal success and development.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and student privacy as appropriate.

Effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and the ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.

Solid understanding of the academic and social challenges experienced by LGBTQAIP2+ students and other marginalized students in a college environment.

Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.

Proficiency in basic data management systems, computer applications, and social media platforms.

Demonstrated commitment to practices in equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism and to serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.
