Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Immigration Compliance Advisor, a Designated School Officer ( DSO ), serves a critical role in VCU’s quest to achieve the global engagement of students, scholars, faculty, and staff that transforms lives and communities. Located in the Global Education Office ( GEO ), the position of Immigration Compliance Advisor supports VCU’s international and compliance initiatives by providing subject matter expertise and performing duties in two related but distinct areas: Immigration Compliance Assurance and Immigration Advising. This position supports international student success by ensuring smooth immigration processes and status maintenance for international students and scholars enrolled at VCU or visiting the University on other capacities. The Immigration Compliance Advisor serves as a user-friendly resource for international students and scholars and the campus community alike, including assisting international student and scholars by informing, advising, and supporting them in maintaining their immigration status. The Immigration Compliance Advisor is expected to perform all duties in a context of engaged customer service and care, exhibiting respect for customers’ goals and objectives; dynamic educational exchange, with personally and/or professionally informed sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity and fluency; and an understanding of, and interest in, both the restrictions and the possibilities of relevant US, state, and local law and VCU policies. The Immigration Compliance Advisor reports directly to Primary Designated School Officer ( PDSO ), the Associate Director of International Student and Scholar Programs ( ISSP ).

Minimum Hiring Standards

Education and experience:

A. Bachelor’s degree plus at least 2 years of full-time service as a Designated School Official ( DSO ) at a college or university with concurrent experience as administrator or co-administrator of Sunapsis or a similar F-1 and J-1 visa immigration data management system (e.g., TerraDotta or Ellucian).
B. Knowledge of higher education organization, processes, personnel practices, and communication techniques.
C. Knowledge of international education and challenges that confront culturally diverse people.
D. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse environment or commitment to do so as an employee at VCU .

A. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively and tactfully communicate regulatory nuance to institutional and international customer-base that is professionally, educationally, and culturally diverse.
B. Excellent research and analytic skills; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, interpret regulations and policies, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to create and use systematic approaches to problem solving and troubleshooting.
C. Strong time and project management skills with the capability to establish action plans, set clear goals, monitor and communicate progress, and follow through on all initiatives to completion. Ability to plan short- and longer-term goals. Excellent organizational skills. Detail-oriented and able to work independently and to manage and meet multiple priorities and deadlines.
D. Proficient to advanced knowledge using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and comfort with basic digital management systems for customer service and compliance needs.
US law requires that a DSO or ARO be either a US citizen or permanent resident (green card holder).
