Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Virginia Commonwealth University’s College of Humanities and Sciences ( CHS ) seeks a dynamic and deeply experienced Director of Development who will create and execute the planning and implementation of all of the College’s development and alumni activities.

The Director of Development will be highly organized, focused on achieving individual giving and institutional fundraising goals and driving all major gift activity for the college. They will manage a portfolio of donors that includes current and previous donors as well as new prospects, cultivating and stewarding their interest and involvement in the Humanities and Sciences to result in not only expanded but also increased levels of giving.

The Director will report jointly to the Dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences, and the Associate Vice President of Development for the Monroe Park Campus. The Director will inspire and manage the development team members around a shared vision for the College’s long-term success. As a visible and people-oriented development professional with a commitment to morale-building, the Director will adapt easily to varying situations and be comfortable engaging with a wide range of individuals.

The Director will:

●Direct, plan, coordinate and implement administrative and operational activities for the CHS fundraising program, primarily through the coordination of major gift and leadership annual fund strategies.
●Manage a portfolio of approximately 80-100 of the College’s top prospects.
●Develop (in conjunction with senior leadership of the school) new opportunities for philanthropic fundraising while stewarding current relationships.
●Serve as the key point person for the school for all philanthropic activities, goals, and programming.
●Supervise, direct, motivate, and evaluate development support staff to assure consistency, quality, and quantity of work performed.
●Audit internal operations to develop standardized procedures in keeping with university policies.
●Coordinate the composing, editing, and publishing of fundraising reports.

Minimum Hiring Standards

●Minimum of 10 years professional experience in fundraising, public relations, marketing, or a related field, or 7 years of progressively responsible professional experience in higher education development or a related field.
●Demonstrated experience in facilitating major gifts through planned giving instruments.
●Working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving.
●Travel involving automobile and air.
●Bachelor’s degree required.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

•An advanced degree preferred or work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree.
•Deep appreciation for the mission and aspirations of VCU
•Desire to play a meaningful role in the life of VCU and to share in the extended community
•Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and close significant major and principal gifts at an institution of higher education, having a demonstrated track record of successful gift solicitations at the $1M and above levels and having been involved as the chief strategist for complex gifts involving a variety of gifting vehicles, including deferred giving
•Experience working in a large, complex university or academic healthcare setting
•Professional credibility and maturity required to engage and leverage senior administrative leadership, deans, faculty volunteer leadership, and other key stakeholders in building a successful campaign and organization
•Management skills that are consistent with bringing out the best in staff and instills pride and ownership in a team effort

Required Licenses/ Certifications Anticipated Hiring Range $120,000-$160,000 Application Process/Additional Information
