POSITION SUMMARY :
The Agricultural Research and Development Program ( ARDP ) in the College of Science, Technology and Agriculture ( CESTA ), Central State University is seeking a 12 month, non-tenure-track, Research Associate Professor of Crop Science and Plant Physiology who has an established background in applying molecular techniques for plant phenotyping and breeding of field and cover crops. The incumbent is expected to have experience in applying molecular techniques for analyzing plant diseases and develop healthier germplasms under different environmental conditions. We are looking for candidates who have previous industrial experience in successful germplasm selection, deployment and breeding projects across countries and programs. The incumbent is expected to have experience in development of cultivars from initialization to commercialization. The candidate is expected is research into new varieties of field crops, cover crops and other emerging plants of interest. Incumbent in this position will work with farmers and agricultural industrial partners in the State of Ohio in developing and breeding based on molecular and phenotyping techniques. The candidate, in collaboration with other appropriate researchers at CESTA, is expected to explore extensions of research in the impacts of crops of interest to farmers and agricultural industry in Ohio, including natural products. The candidate is also expected to develop an independent extramurally funded research program that is relevant to farmers and other stakeholders in Ohio.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Establish and maintain a competitive research program in the fields of plant science and crop physiology that will focus on the development of disease free field and cover crops that directly impacts farmers and other appropriate stakeholders in Ohio and beyond.
• Build collaborations with famers and agricultural companies, obtain external research funding, publish results in peer reviewed journals, recognize intellectual property, and release cultivars through appropriate mechanisms instituted at CSU .
• Plans and conducts research in the application of molecular techniques for plant phenotyping and breeding as applied to field and cover crops for improved agronomic performance.
• Collaborates with the farmers and breeding groups interested in the cultivation of specialty field and cover crops.
• Assist in the commercialization of new cultivars
• Engage in plant breeding research focused on developing cultivars of specialty and high yielding varieties of field and cover crops.
• Collaborate with other researchers in ARDP engaged in related studies including natural products research.
• Provide mentoring and advising to undergraduate students by engaging them in research.
• Conduct and publish research in the area of specialty.
• Participate in university and professional development activities.
• Serve on university-wide committees.
• Establish oneself in community service and collaborate with CSU’s cooperative extension program in extending research to CSU stakeholders in agriculture and other water users.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Director for Research

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

• Ph.D. in Crop Science or a related field with experience in applying modern molecular and analytical breeding tools with phenotypic and agronomic field testing and selection to bolster crop improvement
• Skills in generating genome-wide predictions for use in development of training data sets, as well as direct use for germplasm advancement in all stages of breeding programs.
• Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in the areas of genetic mapping, plant diseases;
• Experience and interest in mentoring/teaching students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION :

• Extensive commercial experience in the field of plant breeding or germplasm development preferred in an industrial setting
• Skills in developing and implementing field and greenhouse studies
• Familiarity with patenting and commercializing of germ plasms,
• Evidence of interdisciplinary collaborations or potential for collaborations
• Involvement with recognized professional associations or organizations.
• Must be able to represent Central State University as an 1890 Land Grant Institution to the public including federal and non-federal agencies, and research, agriculture and industry interests.
• Transfer information through scholarly publications, patents and presentations at scientific meetings and through technology transfer to agriculture and industry groups.
