This is a Full-Time Research Technician position in Agricultural Research Development
Program ( ARDP ) within the College of Engineering, Science, Technology and Agriculture ( CESTA ) at Central State University (1890 land-grant.)

The Specialty Corn Breeding Research and Development Program is seeking a Research
Technician to assist in the development of corn parent inbred parent lines and hybrid
varieties with emphasis on optimizing grain starch quality. This is a plant breeding program with an objective of serving area producers and processors with an opportunity to expand their selection unique value-added corn hybrids using conventional breeding techniques to meet the needs of consumers and processors in the food and industrial applications. The
successful candidate will assist the lead breeder with routine seasonal activities including preparation of seed for planting and harvesting research trials, developing parent inbred lines in breeding nurseries and other field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments. The Research Associate will be expected to carry out research trials with oversight and coordination with the project director.

The successful candidate should be an enthusiastic individual interested in a career in plant science. Preference will be given to a motivated candidate possessing a high level of attention to detail. The successful candidate will be willing assist a lead breeder in a number of other seasonal routine activities expected a in corn breeding program:

-Experience or demonstrate an interest in expanding their knowledge in the area of
specialty grains and their utilization
-Carry out field and laboratory activities with oversight and coordination with the project
-Preparation of seed for planting field research trials, hand-pollinations in a breeding nursery, greenhouse and/or winter planting locations
-Proficiency in Excel will be necessary for designing and recording and archiving pedigree information for designing field plots, collecting plant performance data, and grain quality data needed for selection
-Provide mentoring and advising to undergraduate students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds together with the supervising Research Scientist to maximize productivity and encourage a vibrant learning community
-Identify opportunities to improve overall efficiency and productivity and organization.


-Represent Central State University as an 1890 Land Grant Institution to the public
including federal and non-federal agencies, and research, agriculture and industry interests
-Demonstrated skill in obtaining quotes for lab/field supplies and services for research
from commercial ventures and being aware of state and/or federal policies in order to
comply with state and/or federal funding protocol
-Managing the inventory of project related equipment and supplies
-Supporting the goals of the project through daily tasks may include, but are not limited to:
-Operate and maintain field and laboratory equipment and setting up equipment for
lab/ field work
-Assisting in planning, preparing and conducting experiments
-Organize the laboratory, storage area, catalog equipment, order supplies, with a
knowledge of budget
-Analyze data from field and greenhouse experiments using various computer
programs, and provide support for the preparation of Publications and presentations
-Maintain a field and laboratory record book as needed

Minimum Qualifications

-Interest in plant science with application in plant breeding and the seed industry
-B.S. Agronomy or related major
-Demonstrated ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on plot scale equipment
-Interest in mentoring/teaching students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds
-Experience or familiarity of word processing and spreadsheet software

Preferred Qualifications

-M.S. or B.S. in agronomy or related field with industry experience in Corn Production
and/or Variety Development
-Experience growing and maintaining plants in greenhouse Facilities.
