The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences (DBSS) at the new University of Houston College of Medicine (UHCOM) seeks a psychologist or social worker to join us to develop biopsychosocial training aspects of medical student clinical experiences. Proficiency with integrated behavioral healthcare (IBH) and clinical teaching, a doctorate and license eligibility in Texas are required. Prior medical school or residency teaching is expected but a strong record of graduate course leadership or clinical curriculum development may meet this requirement. We anticipate a start date on or before July 1, 2021. At this time, all faculty appointments in the College of Medicine are non-tenure track. The College of Medicine anticipates being able to make tenure track positions available for application in the future.

UHCOM welcomed our first class of thirty in July 2020. Class sizes will incrementally increase over the next five years and a new medical school building opens in 2022. DBSS is one of four departments in the medical school. Faculty represent psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, medical humanities, reflective practice, and compassionate care. We see the doctor-patient relationship as therapeutic and prepare our graduates to have meaningful, effective, and satisfying interactions with patients.

The majority of responsibilities for this position will be for teaching, curricular innovation and academic service. Our curriculum is highly integrative with a ratio of 1:3 for lecture vs. active learning. You will lead DBSS and other UH faculty in collaboration to create medical and graduate student training while on clinical rotations. IBH will be an essential component of this training along with a full range of behavioral and social sciences curricula.

Twenty-five percent of effort will likely be directed to clinical service. You should also be in interested in service on multiple committees as we develop our school.

Scholarly productivity is expected from DBSS clinician educators in the forms of curricular research, grant writing and contributing your expertise for collaboration on UHCOM projects. Your record of scholarship should reflect your degree of involvement in prior academic settings.

UH is a Carnegie Tier One Research University. In addition to behavioral and social sciences, health systems and population medicine are major foci. Together these bring a rich opportunity for curriculum development and health services research. Graduate clinical behavioral health training and innovative research offered by departments of clinical psychology, educational psychology, and social work offer ample opportunity for research as well. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

Include in your application: Letter of Application, Curriculum Vitae and Teaching Evaluations (if available). In your letter, please briefly discuss how your personal career goals align with the UHCOM mission and describe how your experiences have prepared you for leadership of our IBH development. Also, if you did not include teaching evaluations, please explain why.

Specific duties include the following:
