About the Opportunity:
CAMD is looking for a Director of the Center for the Arts to provide innovative leadership and strategic management for the Center for the Arts, which supports and promotes the academic mission, research, cultural leadership, and artistic and intellectual enrichment of the College and University.

Responsibilities:
The Director of the Center for the Arts will provide innovative leadership and strategic management for the Center for the Arts, which supports and promotes the academic mission, research, cultural leadership, and artistic and intellectual enrichment of the College and University. The center will act as an intersection between faculty, students, the greater Northeastern community and the City of Boston. The Director will also oversee the university's contemporary art space, Gallery 360, and its ongoing development as an academic resource that is integrally connected to teaching, learning, and research, and central to the University's campus and community engagement efforts.

The successful candidate will be responsible for programming and executing a diverse range of events, performances, exhibitions, symposia, conferences and public programs which showcase the creative and scholarly works of CAMD's faculty, staff, students, alumni, and invited artists and scholars. The Director will collaborate with units across CAMD and the University as appropriate, including academic units such as the School of Architecture; Department of Art + Design; Department of Communication Studies; School of Journalism; Department of Music; Department of Theatre, as well as other Centers, such as the Center for Design. The Director shall integrate departmental, College and University activities into the Center's programming to underscore CAMD's role as a place to learn, be challenged and explore new perspectives.

With the charge of expanding the visibility and reputation of Northeastern's visual arts, the Director curates and/or co-ordinates exhibitions - and related teaching and public programming - of regional, national, international, and student artists in the university's Gallery 360. The Director identifies, develops, and/or curates exhibitions; collaborates with faculty, students, and staff; produces original exhibition content (which may include essays and catalogues); and works with visiting artists and curators to mount contemporary intellectually and aesthetically challenging exhibits designed to develop and build a sophisticated and effective arts presence on the Northeastern campus and within the Boston arts community. Responsibilities include the planning, execution, and oversight of all exhibitions in Northeastern's primary exhibit space in Gallery 360. The Director reaches out to faculty and offices across campus to form meaningful partnerships, and to develop exhibition-based teaching, learning and research opportunities. This may include one-off guest lectures and gallery-based class visits.

The Director will collaborate with the CAMD's Leadership Team on the strategic positioning of creative practice research, and work closely with the Dean on evolving a strategic vision that enhances and mirrors the strategic mission of CAMD and Northeastern University Effective collaboration with the Senior Development Officer on outreach through special events, corporate, foundation and individual solicitation. Cultivating and maintaining cooperative relationships with arts, media and cultural communities locally, nationally, and internationally, is essential. Additionally, the Director will collaborate with the College's Director of Communications & Marketing on marketing materials, publications and other outreach efforts to increase awareness of Center programming.

The Director will also be responsible for developing the Center's annual budget and maintaining accurate financial records; preparing and overseeing all exhibition, shipping, and loan agreements/contracts; and training and supervising the full-time student co-op position of Gallery Manager and Curatorial Assistant.

Qualifications:
  • M.A. or equivalent, or comparable professional experience in curatorial studies, arts administration, culture and media management or related fields within academic settings with a minimum of five to seven years of experience.
  • Proven expertise to plan highly creative and innovative public events with strong project management skills.
  • Proven track record of being able to attract and work effectively with contemporary artists at a range of prestige.
  • Knowledge of and engagement with contemporary exhibition and arts practices.
  • Ability to plan and execute exhibition-related materials and promotion.
  • Experience with innovative approaches to display and in developing new forms of curatorial practice.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with faculty, students, administration, artists, and outside curators and artists.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and oral and written communication skills are also required.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills
