POSITION DETAILS
The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture (SSA) at The
City College of New York (CCNY) seeks an experienced,
creative leader and collegial partner to serve as Dean, the
administrative and academic head of the school, including programs
in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and
sustainability in the urban environment, and our applied research
center, the J. Max Bond Center for Urban Futures. The Dean will
work with students, faculty, and administrative staff to articulate
a clear, sustaining vision for furthering all aspects of the school
including sound and transparent operations, cogent and imaginative
pedagogy, and a respectful, collaborative atmosphere that values
difference and champions diversity. The Dean reports to the college
Provost and through the Provost to the President. The Dean has a
portfolio including but not limited to the following major
responsibilities:
- Providing academic leadership and direction to the School.
- Leading SSA’s strategic planning efforts; enhancing its research
productivity; working with the department Chair, program directors,
and faculty to develop curriculum for all academic programs through
shared governance; supervising professional staff in accordance
with union contracts; and instituting processes for assessing
results.
- Effectively planning budgets; managing resource allocations and
the endowment; and strengthening donor relations while pursuing a
vigorous development program and leveraging new and existing
resources to improve the school's finances and facilities.
- Building relationships to promote and advocate for SSA and its
mission, current and future operations, faculty, students, and
staff. Communicating strategically through various platforms and
media.
- Forging and reinforcing connections between SSA and external
communities and partners including donors, employers,
practitioners, professional organizations for faculty, students,
and alumni.
- Cultivating and supporting new spaces for design, social
responsibility and research practices that transcend disciplinary
boundaries.
- Representing SSA within CCNY and CUNY and engaging
collaboratively with other Deans and Administrators at City College
to formulate, evaluate, and administer College policy and advance
the School’s and the College’s strategic priorities.
The School:
The Spitzer School of Architecture at City College, now fifty years
old, is the flagship public school of architecture in New York
City. The SSA educates students to become engaged professionals
through focusing on innovative design technologies, research skills
supported by critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaborative
academic programs. The SSA faculty comprises architects, landscape
architects, urban designers, engineers, and architectural and urban
historians, and holds an abiding commitment to design and practice
approaches that transcend disciplines, to creating a just,
sustainable, and imaginative future for a rapidly urbanizing
planet, and to public education of the highest quality. The nearly
500 students at the SSA come from diverse socioeconomic and
cultural backgrounds and are enrolled in accredited first
professional degree programs in architecture and landscape
architecture (B Arch, M Arch, MLA) and postgraduate programs in
architecture, urban design, and sustainability in the urban
environment (MS Arch, MUP in UD, MS Sus). The school's emphasis on
urbanism—the social, cultural, and environmental systems of the
city—has created a unique environment for exploring
transdisciplinary design in theory and in practice that will be
essential to meet this century’s formidable challenges. The SSA is
one of eight schools and divisions at CCNY; our faculty and
students are competitive in regional, national and international
design competitions, publish award-winning journals and books, and
carry forth the mission of the school as professionals in a
multitude of public and private sector roles.
The College:
Since 1847, The City College of New York has provided a high
quality and affordable education to generations of New Yorkers in a
wide variety of disciplines. It is ranked #1 by The Chronicle of
Higher Education out of 369 selective public colleges in the United
States on the overall mobility index. In addition, the Center for
world University Rankings places CCNY in the top 1.2% of
universities worldwide in terms of academic excellence. More than
16,000 students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in eight
professional schools and divisions, driven by significant funded
research, creativity and scholarship. Outstanding programs in
architecture, engineering, education, and the liberal arts and
sciences prepare our students for the future, and produce
outstanding leaders in every field. Our students come from around
the corner and world, representing more than 150
nationalities.
The University:
The City University of New York (CUNY) is the nation’s largest
urban public university. It comprises 25 community colleges, senior
