Vice President for Human Resources

Swarthmore College

Swarthmore, Pennsylvania

Swarthmore College, one of the nation’s finest liberal arts institutions, seeks a strategic, dynamic, and collaborative Vice President for Human Resources (VPHR) to lead the College’s Human Resources Office. This is an exciting and critical moment at the College, as it navigates the challenges brought on by the pandemic and embraces opportunities to think anew about what it means to work at and be part of a residential-based undergraduate institution. The VPHR will be a creative and critical thinker who can elevate the Human Resources Office to new levels of strategic engagement, service delivery, and collaboration with the entire campus community. They will provide leadership on all aspects of human resources, creating a robust organizational structure and fostering a customer-service orientation in the unit; improving the use of technology and data to inform decision-making; deepening the sense of community and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and supporting pathways for staff professional development.

The ideal candidate will bring a record of success in developing and implementing HR programs, plans, policies, and procedures, and maximizing the use of technology to enhance communication and efficiency, as well as significant, proven leadership and management experience in higher education or a comparably complex setting. The individual in this role must possess broad knowledge of employment, compensation, and benefits regulations and practices, along with a proven track record of developing and promoting a diverse and inclusive community.

President Valerie Smith is chairing a 12-member search committee that includes members of the faculty and staff. The committee is assisted by the executive search firm Isaacson, Miller. Please direct all inquiries, nominations, referrals, and applications in strict confidence to:
