Chief Online Officer

Under the supervision of the Senior Vice President for External Affairs, the Chief Online Officer (COO) provides vision, leadership, and operational management of Kean University’s online program. The COO develops and implements a strategic plan for growth of fully online, remote, hybrid, and enhanced learning experiences across all college divisions and for other initiatives. Position responsibilities include budget management, staff management, course review, new program development, and assessment.

The goal of Kean Online is to enable students to successfully pursue their studies online, meet their educational goals, and engage in life-long learning. Kean Online works closely with faculty to develop, revise and make available a wide variety of interactive, accessible, and technology-rich online and hybrid courses. Additionally, the Kean Online team provides support and assistance to faculty and students in the use of teaching and learning resources through workshops, documentation, email, and phone.

The University is in the midst of an exciting period of positive change and momentum. The new Chief Online Officer will help foster that growth and effectively contribute to addressing the University’s priorities of equity and excellence as it moves toward obtaining R2 status as a research university in the Carnegie classification system within the next three to five years, as well as overseeing equitable access to online educational opportunities.

This is not a remote position and requires physical presence on campus as determined by the Supervisor. It requires working on campus during the COVID-19 pandemic and interacting directly with students following all procedures and protocols set forth in the University’s Restart Plan and any procedures/protocols created through additional correspondence. The employee must have the ability to wear a face covering for the duration of the workday during the COVID pandemic or as determined by university protocol.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in Education, Educational Technology, Web/Instructional Design or a related field and a minimum of five years of professional experience managing educational partnerships, academic technology, curriculum design, instructional design, online learning and/or instruction is required. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and seven or more years of related experience will also be considered. Three to five years of experience teaching in higher education, including online course instruction is preferred. Candidate must have working knowledge of HTML, web editing applications, CMS systems, WebCT, CANVAS, Blackboard and other learning management systems (LMS); the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse community; and exceptional oral and written communication skills and consultation skills.
