The School of Art and Design at West Virginia University is accepting applications for a one-year, Visiting Assistant Professor in Graphic Design beginning Fall 2021. This full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track, benefits-eligible position begins in August and is renewable up to 3 years.

This visiting professor assignment will consist of 40% teaching, 40% research/creative activity, 20% service. Teaching will be a 3/3 load consisting of teaching sophomore to senior level. Additional teaching, administrative, and/or service responsibilities will be assigned according to the needs of the program, the School of Art and Design, and the abilities and interests of the candidate.

From writing code to binding books, students in WVU’s Graphic Design program are encouraged to learn a wide range of skills, while investigating how graphic design impacts culture, communicates ideas, and instigates change. Alumni have a proven track record of gaining employment in competitive cities across the country. Faculty have access to the tools and resources of an R1 institution and also have the opportunity to develop and teach specialized courses at the senior level.

Qualifications :

The successful candidate must have an MFA or equivalent terminal degree by the starting date of employment. University-level teaching experience is preferred. The ideal candidate should be well-versed in contemporary graphic design issues and will have a deep understanding of the profession. Expertise is expected in two or more areas including: typography, branding, design for social impact, exhibition design, design research, packaging design, motion graphics, user interface and experience (UI and UX) design, design-system thinking, responsive web design.

The candidate will demonstrate exemplary communication skills, collegiality, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the University. Participation in School of Art and Design activities, attracting and retaining students, and faculty governance is required.
