Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Trades Master Mechanic-Electrical is primarily responsible for identifying and completing maintenance, repair, and replacement work orders independently and as the leader of a multi-craft team. The incumbent will also perform new equipment installations as required.

Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to: operating, maintaining and installing primarily electrical electro-mechanical and other building systems with the goal of providing a quality physical environment in support of the University’s mission; repairing electrical equipment such as building fire alarm systems, electrical distribution systems, lighting systems, generators, MCC’s, switchgear, transfer switches, and electrical portion of laboratory equipment; installing new electrical systems in existing buildings while utilizing all tools of the electrical trade; providing on-the-job craft-skills training to other members of the maintenance team using in-depth knowledge of the electrical trade; responding to service work orders requiring diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance in areas such as air handling equipment, fan coil units, ice machines, refrigerators, freezers, water pumps, cooling towers, window and door repairs, etc.; and communicating directly with building occupants and supervisors to provide information and status of system problems, estimated completion times, effect of system problems on occupant safety and comfort, as required to ensure customer satisfaction.

Minimum Hiring Standards

VCU Facilities Management is seeking to hire a Trades Specialist – Electrician within the Physical Plant unit. This position duties and responsibilities are as follows:

The Journeyman license electrical required and a working knowledge of other trades
Journeyman level knowledge of electrical trade
Ability to troubleshoot a wide variety of mechanical and electrical systems and equipment
Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees, and customers
Ability to maintain records of maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment
Ability to use to use power tools and test instruments
Basic PC skills, ability to use BAS, ability to use work management software
Ability to organize work processes
Virginia Driver’s License required
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
