Job Description

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Arizona campus is hiring an Associate Dean of Students. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Arizona campus is respected worldwide for cutting-edge instruction and training for tomorrow’s aviation, aerospace, security and intelligence leaders. Prescott is a mile-high city and its climate reflects seasonable weather excellent for flying. Daytime averages are 80°F in the summer and 45°F in the winter. At 5,000 ft. above sea level, it boasts a mild climate, clean air, pristine wilderness areas, and nearby national forests. The university is a small, private, residential university in the mountains of Arizona with approximately 3,500 students. Staff/faculty/student interaction is highly valued and is a central theme of our campus. It is located 100 miles north of Phoenix and 120 miles south of the Grand Canyon.

The Associate Dean of Students serves as part of the Dean of Student’s leadership and management team. The primary functions of the Associate Dean of Students are as follows: Oversee student conduct; provide student care, support, and case management; provide oversight for the campus drug and alcohol prevention programs and Biennial Review. Secondary responsibilities include serving as the trainer and advisor for the Student Government Association (SGA) role in student conduct appeals; serving as a member of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT); responding to various questions, inquiries, and student needs that come to the Dean of Students Office; providing support to the Division of Student Affairs and the Student Affairs directors as needed.

Job Duties:

Chief Student Conduct Officer

  • Train and oversee the campus Student Conduct Committee.

  • Train and oversee campus student conduct officers.

  • Train and oversee student members of the Student Government Association (SGA) in their roles related to reviewing student conduct appeals and/or participating in student conduct hearings.

  • Assign all student conduct cases to a student conduct officer.

  • Maintain the campus student conduct and student of concern database in Maxient.

  • Maintain and track all student conduct records.

  • Respond to various inquiries for background and student conduct checks.

  • Maintain good working relationships with relevant local agencies and community resources.

  • Assist the Dean of Students with keeping the Student Handbook current on a yearly basis, especially with regard to student conduct policies, procedures, and practices.

  • Provide a statistical summary after each semester and each academic year for all student conduct cases.

  • Maintain current knowledge of national trends, issues, and best practices related to student conduct. Participate in professional associations and activities, participate regularly in conferences and professional development opportunities.



Student Care, Support, and Case Management

  • In collaboration with the Dean of Students and other Student Affairs staff, provide leadership in responding to various student needs that come to the attention of the office, including personal, academic, medical, emotional, and family situations. Meet with students and families and provide support as needed.

  • Seek out and maintain effective working relationships and collaborations with campus stakeholders and partners.

  • Seek out and maintain effective working relationships with various community resources and partners, including community mental health and crisis support resources and law enforcement.

  • Serve as case manager in student cases and/or in collaboration with the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), provide oversight to other staff members serving in the role of case manager.

  • Provide a key role as needed in assisting with crisis and emergency response in student cases. Serve as first responder for after-hour emergencies on behalf of the Division of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students Office.

  • Respond to inquiries, questions, and concerns from parents and other interested stakeholders.

  • Maintain current knowledge of national trends, issues, and best practices related to college student care, support, and crisis management; participate in professional associations and attend national conferences; advise on potential training and development needs and opportunities for the campus community.



Member, Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)

  • Serve as a key member of the campus Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT).

  • In collaboration with the chair of the BIT and other members, ensure the effective oversight and management of student cases; provide direct case management as necessary.



Oversight, Campus Drug and Alcohol Prevention Efforts for Students & Biennial Review

  • In collaboration with other campus stakeholders including the Dean of Students, Counseling Services, and the Office of Student Engagement, maintain an accurate and ongoing inventory of all campus programs and efforts related to drug and alcohol prevention and education for students.

  • Provide leadership for writing the campus Biennial Review in compliance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act.

  • Assist the Dean of Students in maintaining accuracy in the Student Handbook with regard to drug and alcohol prevention efforts and requirements associated with the Biennial Review.

  • Maintain currency in national trends with regard to drug and alcohol prevention and education, including compliance requirements associated with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act.



Departmental Responsibilities

  • Act as Dean of Students in the Dean’s absence.

  • Assist with the creation and regular updating of relevant student policies and procedures, especially those reflected in the Student Handbook and the campus Catalog, in support of the mission of the University.

  • Serve on committees, task forces, and working groups as needed and requested.

  • Provide support and leadership to the Division of Student Affairs and the other Student Affairs directors as needed.

  • Work with colleagues from Academic Affairs and other campus units on providing trainings, staff development opportunities, and support to faculty and other campus staff.

  • Assist the Dean of Students and the Dean of Students Office Assistant with providing oversight to the overall and effective functioning of the Dean of Students Office.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree. Area of study: Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration.

  • Five to ten years of related work experience.



Required skills, knowledge, abilities:

Work experience in a higher education setting; firm understanding and experience with student conduct policies, practices, procedures, and national trends and best practices; experience with student care, crisis management, and response; computer skills (Microsoft operating systems, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook/email, internet end-user applications); prior work experience in student affairs strongly preferred; ASCA knowledge preferred; NABITA knowledge preferred.
