Mission or Goal of Unit

Established in the early 1960s, the Virginia Treatment Center for Children ( VTCC ) is the Child and Adolescent Division of the VCU Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry and the pediatric psychiatric service of Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR). VTCC combines a multi-prong mission of Clinical Care, Teaching, Research and Advocacy/Community Collaboration to impact a wide array of behavioral health and social determinants of health.

VTCC operates a new (2018) inpatient and outpatient facility, incorporating the latest technology and family friendly environment utilizing a 32 inpatient acute bed service; an expanded multi-disciplinary outpatient service; an innovative mental health resource center to assist pediatricians, behavioral health providers and families, and opportunities for collaborative research and training through the Commonwealth Center for Child and Family Studies ( CICFS ).

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Department of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University is currently seeking a senior level academic full-time child and adolescent psychiatrist to serve as its Division Chair, a member of the Department’s leadership team. The chief purpose of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is to improve the mental health of children and families through clinical care, research, education, and public awareness. This is an opportunity for a dynamic leader who is interested in building programs of excellence, implementing new services and models of care, growing existing programs to meet the needs of our patients and community, developing and supporting research, and enhancing the experience of our trainees.

Position Responsibilities

The Division Chair will be responsible for the operation and growth of the child and adolescent psychiatry inpatient and ambulatory care services, as well as its educational and research programs. The Division Chair will serve as a catalyst for innovation, leading re-design, and advancement of clinical services to bring the latest evidence-based practice models to our patients, community, and trainees. The incumbent will be looked upon to build and grow clinical programs of excellence, innovate, and to foster collaborative relationships. This role will play a key role in maintaining and developing our ACGME fellowship program, APA accredited Pre-doctoral Internship, as well as our Master’s and Post-doctoral level training programs/experiences. The Division Chair should have a vision and interest in helping the Department of Psychiatry, VCU, VCUHS, and CHoR become national leaders in child and adolescent care and research at the local, regional, national, and international levels.

Required Qualifications

• MD/DO, clinical training in Psychiatry and certification through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, as well as subspecialty training and board certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

• Virginia state medical licensure or eligibility

• Significant academic and clinical leadership experience in a C&A psychiatry program at a major academic healthcare organization

• Leadership experience should include clinical practice oversight, strategic planning, direct faculty/provider oversight, managing staffing and recruitment, fostering of clinical research, and faculty and trainee mentoring

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

• A distinguished academic record and national presence in the field of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, journal editorial responsibilities, positions in major national organization(s), or equivalent background
