About the Opportunity:

The Social Justice Resource Center was founded in 2011. It has grown programmatically over the last few years. Its expansion is the result of the increased engagement of Northeastern students around matters of social issues locally, nationally and internationally. Northeastern seeks to retain a talented professional to help guide these conversations and student advocacy around contentious issues. The Assistant Director will provide leadership to ensure that campus programming is enriched, and competencies of global citizenship, critical thinking and pluralism are cultivated throughout the student body through programming, leadership development and mentorship/coaching. This work must be done especially among students who self-identify as change agents or activists through intentional relationship building and support for them. The Assistant Director will also be responsible for curating the SJRC space on campus from an intersectional lens that accounts for how sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, class, ability status etc. interacts with a person's experience of their racial/ethnic identity. The focus will be to identify innovative ways to bring students from different backgrounds together in order to enrich their skills, relationships and ability to communicate and collaborate across difference. To be successful, the Assistant Director will work closely with other departments, areas, and divisions across campus. The Assistant Director will work with stakeholders across campus to develop a comprehensive infrastructure that effectively supports the growth and advancement of the Northeastern students' social consciousness. They will be instrumental in overseeing the successful implementation of creative programming, aligning the strategic planning efforts of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs, and the agenda and initiatives shared by areas within Cultural, Residential and Spiritual Life. This position requires significant involvement in evening and weekend programs.

Responsibilities:

Intersectional Programming The Assistant Director will develop compelling and vibrant programs to encourage learning about global and local social challenges. The Assistant Director will also explore the intersection of economic, linguistic, religious, social, educational and cultural traditions, including directing the implementation of the various aspects of EMPOWER Student Initiative. This individual will oversee the planning and implementation of all SJRC programs, including the development of specific goals and learning outcomes, and program evaluations.

Liaison Partnerships Seek, develop and maintain collaborative and productive partnerships with curricular and co-curricular departments on campus to promote co- sponsorship and collaboration which focuses on creating opportunities for facilitated discussion around social justice, social change and social identity issues relevant to Northeastern students. This individual should work to increase coordination of different actors on campus who are working around these issues. As appropriate, the Assistant Director will also establish and maintain relationships with off-campus organizations and communities of common interest. As well, the Assistant Director will develop collaborative relationships between student groups. Particularly those who major emphasis is activism and advocacy.

Management and Strategic Development of the Social Justice Resource Center. Ensure goal setting and annual assessment planning. Maintains strategic vision of the Center recalibrating the vision of the SJRC to ensure it continues to serve the needs of Northeastern university students and other stakeholders The Assistant Director will also oversee the financial health of the Center, managing and reconciling expenses. Oversee website content and social media for the SJRC. Use communication platforms in their efforts to inform, educate and explore the intersections of student identity and community-building.

Student Leadership Development Develop and execute curriculums and training opportunities to build students' ability to function and advocate in a pluralistic campus environment. In addition, they will serve as a clearinghouse for students regarding available resources around social consciousness. They will provide support and advising to multicultural and social-justice focused student organizations. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Associate Dean for Cultural, Residential and Spiritual Life to facilitate the Intercultural and Political Action Leadership Councils with the goal of skill building in the area Global Citizenship.

Qualifications:

The Assistant Director must possess a Master's degree(s) in Higher Education; Nonprofit or Business; Peace Studies, International Relations, Ethnic Studies, Intercultural Relations, or related fields. The qualified candidate will possess a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in higher education and/or related field (nonprofit/non-governmental organizations, service learning, and social service agencies). The Assistant Director must have demonstrated success in program development and a proven track record of designing and implementing programs aimed at developing intercultural competence and community development. They should also have experience in leading and working in collaboration with key partners to achieve positive outcomes. Additional requirements are deep awareness of issues and concerns relevant to students of diverse backgrounds. The Assistant Director must be comfortable with making presentations and leading public forums. They must be student-centered and articulate in an understanding of social identity as it pertains to college students. Experience with creating/ leading training workshops and educational experiences for college students is beneficial.
