Department Information
The Department of Resident Life (DRL) at the University of Maryland
serves a highly diverse population of approximately 12,500
undergraduate students living in traditional residence halls,
apartments, and suites including some public/private partnership
apartment communities. About 46% of all resident students are
enrolled in twelve living-learning programs covering a wide array
of academic areas. Resident Life employs a diverse workforce of 88
full-time and graduate staff members and about 600 undergraduate
student staff members. The Department values respectful, equitable,

represent and serve the diversity of persons who live and work in
the University of Maryland’s residence halls. The University of
Maryland campus is located in the greater Washington, DC metro area
just eight miles from downtown DC and 30 miles from Baltimore, MD.

General Description of Duties:
The Associate Director of Resident Life for Communities provides
leadership—vision, direction and oversight—to the implementation of
administrative and community development strategies that create a
successful academic residential community of approximately 12,500
students in a variety of types of residence halls. The Associate
Director serves as a member of the senior management team for the
Department. The Associate Director provides direction and
leadership to the activities of 39 professional and 500 student
staff members in their responsibilities for student and community
development, student behavior management, personnel and
administrative policy and procedures, physical facilities concerns,
staff supervision and development, and on-duty crisis/emergency
management. The Associate Director encourages innovation and
collaboration to address student needs. As a cornerstone of the
position, The Associate Director leads and models practices that
foster equity and inclusion in a diverse community of residents,
student staff, and professional staff.
The Associate Director builds liaison relationships with academic
and student affairs agencies and provides oversight to liaison
roles of residence life professional staff with Residential
Facilities, Dining Services, Living/Learning Programs, Department
of Public Safety, Counseling Center, Mental Health and Health
Center staff. This position assumes leadership in the
implementation of the On-Campus Student Housing Strategic Plan, is
directly involved in the development of enhancements to the
residential education program and the implementation of facilities
construction and renovation projects managed by Residential
Facilities. The Associate Director supervises on-duty staff
management of emergencies for the entire residence hall program and
serves in the on-call rotation. This position is classified as an
essential University staff member and is required to submit
financial disclosure statements to the State of Maryland.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in college student personnel administration or a
directly related field of study required; a minimum of six to eight
years of progressive responsibility and experience in full-time
residence life administrative experience required. Experience
supervising full-time staff required. Must actively demonstrate an
appreciation for and promotion of diversity, multiculturalism, and
inclusion in all areas of work.
