Temple University’s Department of Nursing invites nominations and applications for the David R. Devereaux Endowed Chair of Nursing, an endowed professorship reflecting distinction in research.

Temple University’s College of Public Health is one of the largest colleges of public health in the country.  We are home to faculty who specialize in 17 health disciplines who are supported and encouraged by leadership to collaborate, provide opportunities for interprofessional education to our students, and develop a synergistic approach to research collaborations.  The College is investing significant recruitment efforts in the Department of Nursing, with a strong focus on developing its research portfolio. Current strengths within the college include research focused on obesity, nutrition, informatics, organ donation, cancer prevention and control, maternal and child health, opioids, mental health, and HIV/AIDS. We encourage established senior researchers to apply and will dedicate substantial resources to assist with relocation, cluster hiring, and provide entrée to established relationships with community partners in the city of Philadelphia.

Qualifications and Interests. We seek a highly collaborative senior faculty member with expertise in health systems management, inter-professional collaboration, health disparities and/or social justice. Successful applicants should have national stature in the field of nursing, present a strong & sustained record of research excellence, and have demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate should have at least one nursing degree and an earned doctorate in nursing, public health discipline or related discipline.

The ideal candidate will have an active, externally funded research portfolio that is focused on one or more relevant areas of interest related to health disparities, social justice and urban health. The candidate should have demonstrated effective collaboration with teams and partners across disciplines as well as passion to understand and intervene to improve factors that shape the health of individuals, families and communities with a particular interest in populations impacted by health disparities. The ideal candidate will have funded research in areas consistent with the values and interests of nursing and bring to Temple a deep interest in advancing interprofessional practice and transdisciplinary research. Applicants should have a record appropriate to warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor. Cluster hiring of research teams including senior and early career faculty is encouraged. The Department.  We are a department of 23 faculty at present offering 2 accredited programs to some 500 students. Our 8-semester Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, with freshmen admission is recognized for its high NCLEX pass rate, clinical affiliations with outstanding health care facilities in the Philadelphia area,  innovative 5-semester community home rotation with a population-based, service-learning focus; and dedication to our community and social justice. Our Doctor of Nursing Practice program includes a post baccalaureate option with specialty concentrations in Adult Gerontology Primary Care and Family Individual across the Lifespan. Our post master’s DNP option prepares graduates for practice leadership roles in a variety of health care settings. Expansion of our graduate program offerings is anticipated and will include additional DNP specialties and a master’s direct entry program for non-nursing college graduates.

Dr. Mary Terhaar, a foremost national expert on preparing and developing the nursing workforce and translating evidence into practice and education, recently joined Temple and was appointed Department Director. She is engaging in an ambitious agenda to develop the research portfolio of the department, advance graduate programming, and build on the department’s strengths in grant support for students. In addition to searching for tenure track faculty, there will be searches for seasoned nursing clinicians and educational leaders. We are delighted to be on track to hiring several outstanding early career researchers to begin in 2021-2022.

The College. At a time when public health has never been more important, Temple’s College of Public Health is working to solve health’s complexities for a better tomorrow. As one of the largest colleges of public health in the country, we are home to faculty who specialize in 17 health disciplines to prepare researchers, practitioners and educators to collaborate across disciplines to understand community needs, create evidence-based solutions, and deliver effective, compassionate care.

A CEPH-accredited school of public health, the College is a constellation of academic units of public health, social work and health profession disciplines, enrolling about 4,300 students. The College’s research focuses on social, behavioral, and environmental inquiries, medical/health interventions, and basic science and is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and other major funders. A seasoned and well-staffed Office of Research Administration and the Biostatistics Consulting Center support faculty and student researchers. The College has recently launched the Office on Community Engaged Research and Practice. We are harnessing the collective energies of our clinical disciplines through an emerging, innovative framework for interprofessional education.
