Associate General Counsel I - Labor and Employment
District Office
City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) , the largest community college system in Illinois, is made up of seven colleges and five satellite sites, providing more than 70,000 students each year access to a quality, affordable education.
The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for all legal work arising from the activities of the District.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE
Serves as labor relations legal counsel in the Office of the General Counsel and represents the District as counsel on matters related to collective bargaining agreements and labor law matters. Represents and advises Officers and administrators of the City Colleges of Chicago.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Coordinates the labor grievance process at the Districtand
college level, working with management and Human Resources
representatives on strategies for responding to and resolving
grievances.
- Works with HR and CCC employees to support and prepare for
labor grievances. Provides legal advice on how to defend against
labor grievances.
- Works with Associate General Counsel on matters relating to
labor relations and other areas of employment law.
- Tracks the status of all grievances to ensure uniformity and
timelinessin response and adherence to collective bargaining
agreement requirements.
- Works with Associate General Counsel or Supervisor to represent
and advise District administrators in legal proceedings, including
state and federal court actions, administrative proceedings and
depositions.
- Receives and coordinates responses to information requests from
labor unions.
- Advises seniormanagement in legal matters, participate in
meetings, and make presentations relating to cases and
transactions.
- Conduct legal research on local, state and federal laws, and
administrative regulations and procedures.
- Work on unusual or complex legal problems and provide creative
solutions.
- Perform other legal related duties as assigned.
- Adhere to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to: Associate General Counsel II
Direct Supervision: None
Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school
- Admission to the Illinois Bar (or another state bar having
reciprocity with Illinois)
- Five years of relevant experience as a practicing attorney
including legal experience handling collective bargaining-related
matters, discrimination law
- Exceptional organization and time management skills with the
ability to prioritize, coordinate and satisfy numerous competing
demands
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to advise diverse
stakeholders in a high-volume environment.
- Strong legal research, analytic, and oral/written communication
skills.
- Sound judgment, high ethical standards, discretion and
integrity.
- A commitment to diversity and the ability to work with
divergent personalities
- Must be self-directed and innovative
Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within 6 months of hire.
