Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of Housing and Residence Life at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington houses over 4500 students in a combination of residence halls, suites, and apartments. It is the mission of the Office of Housing and Residence Life to appropriately challenge residents to develop to their full potential by supporting their educational and personal growth and development. The Housing and Residence Life staff maintain an environment that is conducive to educational excellence by providing academic support, educational opportunities, and challenges for individual residents. Opportunities for students to attain a greater appreciation and understanding of cultural and lifestyle differences and opportunities for leadership and self-governance roles are integral to the on-campus experience.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Public Communications Specialist performs a range of public communications and/or marketing work in support of the mission and goals of Housing & Residence Life ( HRL ). This position will be responsible for internal and external HRL communication through a variety of media/platforms (paper, email, social media, web, etc.) to a variety of stakeholders (students, parents, and staff/offices, etc.).
The Public Communications Specialist will have primary responsibility for paper and digital marketing materials, the HRL website, and social media accounts. Work includes developing and delivering information and promotion through a variety of communications mediums in order to stimulate student interest in HRL .
This position will coordinate forward-facing outreach events, public relation-focused activities, and procurement of promotional items. This may include supporting, assisting or coordinating some departmental, divisional and university events. The position will also supervise and coordinate the work of multiple student marketing assistants.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience
All degrees must be
received from appropriately accredited institutions
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, Digital Media, Events & Tourism, or other related degree
• Two years of experience in online marketing (web, e-mail, social, mobile, content marketing)
• A portfolio that represents the candidate’s creativity, visual style, and design experience
• Experience in online marketing (web, e-mail, social media, mobile, content marketing)
• Digital marketing background, ideally in technology
• Specialized training in website management, social media & technology marketing
• Microsoft Office, Macromedia suite, Adobe suite
• HTML5, XHTML, CSS design, cross-browser and cross-platform compatibility
