Math Lab Manager

Washburn University’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for the Math Lab Manager position beginning no later than August 1, 2021. An earlier start date is possible. This position is a full-time (40-hour workweek), 9-month, non-tenure track appointment, with the possibility of additional compensation for summer work. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

General Statement of Duties:

The Math Learning Lab is an innovative drop-in tutoring center at Washburn University dedicated to advancing student success in math courses and increasing on-time student graduation rates. The Math Learning Lab Manager, a faculty member within the Mathematics and Statistics Department, is responsible for the lab’s daily activities, including providing individualized instruction in preparatory math, algebra, and quantitative reasoning courses and supervising and training tutors. The Manager will support student learning and academic success, monitor lab utilization, and regularly report student progress to stakeholders. The Math Learning Lab Manager directly reports to the Mathematics and Statistics Chair and works with other faculty members and the Project Director of the Title III Strengthening Institutions Grant.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience teaching or tutoring mathematics at the high school or college level.
  • Experience with preparatory math, quantitative reasoning, and/or college algebra.
  • Evidence of working effectively with diverse populations and/or students with varying levels of academic preparation.
  • Evidence of demonstrated dedication to inclusive pedagogies and commitment to inclusion as a core value.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience administering a tutoring program or training tutors.
  • Experience with online homework systems such as Pearson’s MyMathLab, Hawkes Learning System, etc.


  • Manage the daily activities of the Math Learning Lab.
  • Tutor students in preparatory, algebra, and quantitative reasoning courses and assist them in the Math Learning Lab.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and schedule undergraduate students as tutors in the Math Learning Lab.
  • Administer tests and help with placement of students into correct courses.
  • Teach preparatory math course sections as needed.
  • Document Math Learning Lab utilization and report student progress to stakeholders.
  • Notify students who fall behind in their work and make appropriate referrals to applicable student support services.
  • Collaborate with the Mathematics and Statistics Department faculty, academic advisors, the Project Director Title III Grant, and student success coaches.
