The School of Design at South Dakota State University is offering an exciting career opportunity as an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join us in the School of Design. This is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track, benefit eligible position and start date is August, 2021. This position is supervised by the Director of the School of Design.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

South Dakota State University Graphic Design faculty teach in a robust and growing Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program. Candidates for the Assistant Professor position will teach assigned courses in Graphic Design, support accreditation efforts, and engage in student recruitment and retention. Candidates will demonstrate expertise in one or more of the relevant expertise areas. Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate the capacity to establish a national research/creative agenda through peer review.

School of Design tenured and tenure-track faculty teach a 3/3 course load. Tenure-track faculty may be assigned research/creative activity release time (20%) as well as service expectations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Terminal degree in Graphic Design, Interactive Design or equivalent, such as MFA, MDes or PhD by start date.
  • Potential for scholarly research or creative agenda demonstrated through peer reviewed publications or portfolio.
  • Ability to teach Graphic Design at the university level.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching at the university level in one or more of the relevant areas of expertise.
  • Graphic Design expertise in professional practice or design achievement demonstrated

through national peer-review and personal portfolio in one or more of the relevant areas of expertise.

  • Evidence of progress towards peer reviewed scholarly research and/or creative activity.
  • Ability to teach or work collaboratively with other disciplines.
  • Commitment to working with diverse students, faculty, and staff.

Graphic Design is nested in SDSU’s School of Design where faculty and programs form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The School grants the BFA in Graphic Design, Studio Art, Architecture, and Interior Design; BLA in Landscape Architecture; and the MArch in Architecture. Students may also earn certificates of study in Animation, Art History, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Graphic design students may pursue minors in Advertising, Entrepreneurial Studies, Social Media, Film Studies, Museum Studies, Computer Science, or related study.

The program has initiated NASAD accreditation and is committed to a successful outcome by 2022. Graphic Design majors are served by four full-time graphic design faculty and complimented by art foundation instructors. Graphic Design majors study visual communications theory and practice in digital, print, time-based, and interactive media. Areas of study include Typography, Branding, Computer Graphics, Publication, Motion Graphics, Interactive Design, Package Design, Information Design, Digital Illustration, Visual Communication, and Animation.

As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of the university is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.

SDSU was recognized as one of 54 institutions in the United States as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities in 2014. The university’s total research expenditures are greater than $60 million. SDSU is the state’s first High Research Activity institution as classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
