Job Overview:

The Dean of Belonging, Engagement and Leadership is responsible for the development and oversight of wholistic student involvement, inclusion, and engagement experiences across campus. The Dean supports and advances the vision and values of the College by overseeing the planning, implementation and collaboration on traditions, programs, services, and learning opportunities that promote an inclusive and welcoming campus climate, student well-being, and leadership development. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to foster intercultural and cross- cultural understanding and belonging, and serves to provide advocacy and support for students from diverse backgrounds.

Job Duties:

Student Life

  • Lead and supervise the Student Life units that comprise the Belonging, Engagement & Leadership alignment including: Bonner Center for Services, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Leadership & Involvement, and Outreach and Wellness.

  • Lead the implementation of strategically developed priorities of belonging and leadership.

  • Lead division-wide efforts around the implementation of the College's Strategic and IDEAS plan; collaborate directly with Strategic Initiatives and Academic Affairs on institutional planning, initiatives and responses.

  • Provide support and synergistic leadership in collaboration with the Chaplain and Athletics.

  • Serve as a senior member of the Student Life team.

  • Advise student organization affinity groups including advising and supporting program efforts, and student organizations focusing on issues of inclusivity (cultural, identity, advocacy). Develop and implement training for advisors; Provide program planning and promotion advising and support.

  • Lead division-wide efforts to develop a comprehensive model of events and activities that support campus life.

  • Lead division-wide efforts to foster belonging and leadership efforts should include the engagement of large campus events and traditions as well as cohort-based programming and trainings (Fraternity & Sorority Life, student activities, Athletics, Residence Life, etc.); Enhance diversity and inclusivity efforts through student leadership development.

Equity & Inclusion

  • Support students, particularly students of diverse backgrounds, toward a successful Rhodes experience.

  • Initiate and collaborate on programs and activities aimed at creating an inclusive environment and fostering a campus climate that respects the wholeness of all members.

  • Serve as a resource and referral source for faculty and staff regarding student facing issues of diversity and inclusion. Initiate opportunities to discuss policy, procedures, and programming with faculty and staff.

  • Serve as an advocate for students, individually and collectively, of varying racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and sexual orientations.

  • Provide strategic support to strategic initiatives, academic affairs, and other College divisions in support of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.


  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.

  • Supervise, train and evaluate student leaders and student staff associated with Belonging & Leadership; Hires, trains, coordinates, and supervise Belonging & Leadership staff.

  • Fulfill on-call responsibilities on a rotating basis; Manage crises related to student organization behavior; As needed assist with crisis intervention and management, stabilizing the situation and coordinating the notification of the appropriate college officials/referral agencies.

  • Prepares long- and short- range plans and budgets, and monitors and reports performance related to goals, and manages office budget.

  • Collects data and develops and implements program assessment plan to evaluate student learning outcomes, and student satisfaction.

  • Serves on various campus committees.

  • Supports and maintain programs and services that engage and retain students.

  • Regular on-campus work is required in a high pace setting.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the VP of Student Life.

Job Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in higher education administration, student personnel or related field required.

  • Minimum of five years professional work experience in higher education. Experience must include student advisement, programming and leadership, and working with diverse populations. Must possess a demonstrated expertise in supporting diverse populations and implementing strategies to foster intercultural and cross-cultural understanding in a college setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to work independently in a highly productive and fast-paced environment.

  • Extensive knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and policies; Proven leadership in the area of risk management; Knowledge and experience with College policies and legal issues in higher education.

  • Ability to provide consultation and coaching for managers, supervisors, staff, faculty and administrators.

  • Ability to mediate and use problem-solving skills to conduct alternative dispute resolution.

  • Ability and experience in investigating and responding to risk management and wellness concerns.

  • Ability to provide perspective and utilize a proactive style of leadership that encourages teamwork and interaction.

  • Excellent written and communication skills; Full competence in using computer software packages for the office environment.

  • A thorough understanding of the organizational management of student affairs including partnership building with students, faculty, staff, parents, and community.

  • Demonstrated understanding of student services and deep commitment to the connection between the curricular and co-curricular spheres of a college community.

  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population, promote a campus climate of inclusion and participation by all students.

  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and the ability to deal with complex and sometimes sensitive issues.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships across campus; Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and families in order to establish and maintain good working relationships.
