The School of Marine and Environmental Affairs (SMEA) at the University of Washington (UW) seeks a Professor of Practice who specializes in the human dimensions of fisheries. The Professor of Practice position is reserved for distinguished practitioners or academicians who have had a major impact on a field important to the University’s teaching, research, and/or service mission. This is a multi-year, full time (100% FTE), 12 month non-tenure track position. A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent, and a record of interdisciplinary activity, external engagement, and extramural funding are required. Salary and research support will be dependent on external funding.

The successful candidate is expected to lead a strong, extramurally funded research program. The SMEA degree program emphasizes applied, problem-focused research and education. We seek an internationally-recognized scholar with a deep understanding of international fisheries governance, both formal and informal, who will supervise student research on applied aspects of the human dimensions of fisheries. Applicants should describe how they expect their research will enhance collaborative, interdisciplinary linkages within SMEA and across other disciplines within the College of the Environment and the UW. Collaboration with external partners including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and Tribal governments and First Nations is desired.

The UW and SMEA promote diversity and inclusivity among our students, faculty, staff and public. Thus, we are seeking candidates whose experiences have prepared them to fulfill our commitment to inclusion and have given them the confidence to fully engage audiences from a wide spectrum of backgrounds.

SMEA exists within the UW College of the Environment and is home to a broadly interdisciplinary faculty with shared interests in the human dimensions of global environmental change and a common focus on issues of environment and society. Our degree program serves Master’s students who, through thesis and professional tracks, prepare for careers in government, nonprofits, the private sector, and academia.

The UW is located in the greater Seattle metropolitan area, with a dynamic, multicultural community of 3.7 million people and a range of ecosystems from mountains to ocean. The UW serves a diverse population of 80,000 students, faculty and staff, including 25% first-generation college students, over 25% Pell Grant students, and faculty from over 70 countries. A recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation Award to increase the advancement of women faculty in science, engineering, and math (see https://advance.washington.edu), the UW offers a wide range of professional development and networking opportunities for faculty. A comprehensive benefits package is also offered, including access to campus childcare and health/vision/dental plans for spouse, qualified domestic partner, and/or dependents.

Qualifications

The Professor of Practice will demonstrate a) evidence of research excellence concerning the human dimensions of fisheries including interdisciplinary activity and external engagement, and b) evidence of a vibrant, externally-funded research program concerning one or more aspects of the human dimensions of fisheries.

Instructions

Applicants should apply electronically via Interfolio, and submit the following: 1) summary of your qualifications for the position limited to 350 words, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) statement of research interests and philosophies including a brief statement describing how your research and service demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion through scholarship or by improving access to higher education for underrepresented individuals or groups (2 pages maximum), 4) copies of three representative publications, and 5) three letters of reference addressing your qualifications for the position.
