William Paterson University invites applications for the 12-month full time position of Executive Director of Development.

Under the direction of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Executive Director provides leadership and management for the University's Annual Giving and Donor Relations offices and staff. The ED guides the respective office directors in designing and implementing strategies that meet the division's fundraising and donor stewardship goals in support of the University's mission for student success.

The Office of Institutional Advancement at William Paterson University is a group of nearly 25 staff members dedicated to engaging a robust community who believes that their contributions can transform the lives of approximately 9,700 people who make up the University's deserving and diverse student body.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide Annual Giving leadership to ensure that direct mail, phonathon, personal solicitation, email and other appeal channels are used effectively to achieve fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership for a robust and effective donor relations management system of a rapidly growing and vital donor funded scholarship program from application through selection to extending meaningful scholarships to students.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for the donor relations function that includes the execution of a comprehensive, meaningful stewardship plan for acknowledging, recognizing and thanking donors.
  • Collaborate with the major gift officers to maximize donor pipeline potential and coordinate timing of appropriate annual fund communication and solicitations to support major gift moves management and solicitations.
  • Cultivate and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects.
  • Collaborate with Alumni Relations Executive Director and staff and University staff campus-wide to build engagement and solicitation strategies that encourage alumni involvement and increase annual alumni giving.
  • Create a balanced portfolio of discovery, cultivations, and solicitation appointments in order to secure major gifts and Annual Giving leadership gifts from alumni, friends, corporate prospects and/or other constituencies. Conducts face-to-face meetings with qualified contacts, prospects, and donors.
  • Manage departmental budget allocation; negotiate contracts with third party vendors.
  • Serve on institutional committees such as Middle States and Strategic Planning; participates in Alumni Executive Council meetings as a non-voting resource; works] with faculty and staff across the University to build partnerships, promote philanthropy, and reach common institutional goals.
  • Commit to supporting student needs and to cultivating their success through the donor funded scholarship program, phonathon call center and beyond.
  • Work with graduate assistants and undergraduate student office employees to support student needs and cultivate their success. Ensure that campus-employed students are provide meaningful career-related work experience and coaching and when possible, provide internships and or academic research projects.
  • Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
  • Five or more years professional experience in a fundraising environment which includes supervisory experience
  • Documented ability to establish strategic goals and objectives and develop action plans for implementation
  • Measurable success in achieving fundraising goals
  • Working knowledge of social media and relevant technology skills
  • Flexibility to work schedule that in includes frequent travel within the local area and periodically out-of-state; able to attend University-sponsored events held during evenings and/or weekend hours
  • Driver's license valid in New Jersey for work related travel
  • Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Working knowledge of Blackbaud Management System (formerly AcademicWorks) and Banner Advance or similar fundraising software
  • Personal attributes and traits:
