The Stanford Graduate School of Business Library invites applications and nominations for the position of Business Research & Collections Librarian in the Research and Discovery unit. The GSB Library is one component of the Research Hub, which provides core research and collections support services including data analytics and research computing, human subject research, faculty-driven research initiatives and labs, and event and communications support. The Research Hub engages with faculty members, researchers, and students across the lifecycle of research, teaching and scholarship. Working in a startup type environment and joining an experienced team ready to share knowledge, the Research & Collections Librarian provides research support, instruction and outreach to the following groups:

  • Stanford Graduate School of Business faculty.
  • The Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Management programs at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
  • The GSB PhD program, offering degrees in Accounting; Economic Analysis & Policy; Finance; Marketing; Operations, Information & Technology; Organizational Behavior; and Political Economics.
  • Researchers, members of the Stanford University community, and other library users.

We are looking for an experienced academic librarian who will enhance our data and electronic collections development program, conduct research consultations, offer course-related instruction and workshops, conduct outreach efforts to raise awareness of library resources and services, and maintain research guides and other support tools. Duties may be tailored to the individual’s strengths and interests, and a variety of additional duties may be assigned, based on the Librarian’s expertise and organizational needs.

The Research & Collections Librarian participates in planning and implementation for the GSB Library; collections and research project management, including vendor relations; participates in Library committees and task forces; and engages in collaborative activities with all parts of the Research Hub. This individual is expected to participate in professional activities outside of the GSB Library and to monitor developments and best practices elsewhere to help ensure the excellence of the Library’s research support services and collections.

The Research & Collections Librarian will need to be able to adapt to change as the Library and School evolve. A strong candidate will be able to understand complex research problems, identify resources, and contextually curate information to assist in solving them. The position will be a key member of both the Research and Discovery Department and the Collection Development Team. This position will be offered as either a Librarian 3 (Job Code 1783) or Librarian 4 (Job Code 1784) depending on the successful candidate's knowledge and work experience. Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Applies knowledge of business, information and data resources to assist patrons and staff with complex reference and research inquiries.
  • Participate in the acquisition and management of digital collections in support of the research mission of the GSB.
  • Select library materials and information resources in a broad or interdisciplinary area, including responsibility for collections management, preservation decision-making, donor relations and liaison with users.
  • Works with both internal (faculty, Stanford Libraries, staff, etc.) and external (private sector, government, nonprofit entities) stakeholders in building cooperative collections. Serves on a team that coordinates and maintains licenses/NDAs for electronic databases and data sets.
  • Works actively with primary clientele to explore and propose collaborative projects, options for new research services, and options for better integration between the GSB Library and other GSB units.
  • Maintain library information systems documentation.
  • Develop procedures for programs or operations of a library unit.
  • Teach workshops, lead tours and/or give demonstrations of library resources.
  • Conceive and develop physical and virtual exhibitions, including selection of materials, design of exhibit, preparation of related publications, etc.
  • May supervise staff or student staff.
  • Be flexible to completing any other additional assigned duties.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and at least five years of experience in a relevant library setting with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of business, economics, or social science information and issues surrounding research data.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate data and other electronic resources, and manage vendor relationships.
  • Experience with relevant aspects of academic research including understanding of contemporary research practices, trends and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to interact with internal and external constituencies throughout the contracting and acquisitions lifecycle.
  • Deep understanding and engagement with the range of library operations, trends and practices.
  • Ability to manage projects, develop policies or drive library initiatives across functional lines.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging with colleagues across the University and beyond in a collaborative and constructive fashion.
  • Demonstrated success in independently performing complex job functions such as collections management, preparation of exhibits, developing policies for business practices.
  • Evidence of engagement in relevant professional or academic communities.
  • Consistent display of excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
  • Evidence of professional contribution and achievement beyond the library may be expected at this rank.

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • A second Masters or PhD is preferable.
  • Experience with contracts and other legal agreements.
  • Research project management.
