Job Description

One Health recognizes that the human condition is closely allied with animal health and the environment. The Department of Dairy Science at Virginia Tech seeks an Assistant Professor of Animal Health that will contribute to its campus-wide One Health Initiative. The position is an academic-year tenure-track position with primary appointment in research and secondary appointment in teaching. The successful candidate will develop a nationally/internationally recognized and extramurally-funded research program focused on health-related challenges associated with modern animal production systems and their environments. Disciplines include, but are not limited to: immunology, genomics, nutritional metabolism, microbiology and virology. Research approaches should emphasize molecular, cellular, and computational biology tools and techniques in concert with whole-animal approaches. This position is part of Virginia Tech’s Global Systems Science Destination Area. The Global Systems Science Destination Area is focused on the transdisciplinary study of the dynamic interplay among natural and social systems. A large number of highly motivated and productive faculty members from Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Engineering are currently engaged in addressing problems facing human health and well-being, and the environment. Candidates will have the opportunity to participate in research, curriculum, and/or outreach initiatives within the Global Systems Science Destination Area. The successful candidate will be expected to teach animal health or closely aligned discipline-based course(s), recruit and advise undergraduate and graduate students, and collaborate across the department, college and university community.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Dairy, Animal, or Veterinary Sciences, Biology, Molecular Biology, or closely related fields, and show evidence of strong communication and teamwork skills. Desired qualifications include: post-doctoral training, peer-reviewed publications and grant writing experience. Special consideration will be given to candidates working in dairy cattle, but a willingness to add dairy cattle to an already successful research portfolio is acceptable.
