General Summary/Purpose

The Research technologist will work in a laboratory that focuses on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and host-pathogen interactions in the Division of Gastroenterology. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator, the individual will be responsible for performing routine experiments in a research laboratory and contributing to general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies. The individual will carry out experiments under the initial supervision until proven proficient in performing experiments independently. An ideal candidate will be motivated to learn new skills, including organoid culture and cell culture experiments. He/She will perform lab procedures including PCR, DNA and RNA extractions, animal care, sample processing and storage, data entry, presentations of results to other researchers, and some data analysis procedures.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Isolate and maintain human and mouse enteroids following established protocols
  • Nucleic acid isolation
  • Quantitative RT-PCR (qPCR)
  • Immunoblotting
  • Immunostaining
  • Phase-contrast and fluorescence microscopy
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using computer software applications.
  • Prepare summary of experimental protocols and relevant data to present/discuss with the faculty investigator
  • Apply previous knowledge to troubleshoot experiment
  • Keep a thorough and organized laboratory notebook to document experiments.
  • Maintain an orderly laboratory workspace.
  • Ensures laboratory efficiency by following set protocols for lab cleanliness, organization, and safety regulations.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in lab-based science.

  • Communication skills using the spoken word
  • Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
