General summary/purpose:

The Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine invites applications for a leadership position in the area of Strategic Collaborations and External Relationships.

The Director for Strategic Collaborations position will play a vital role in developing and executing strategic priorities and initiatives within the Armstrong Institute and Johns Hopkins University (JHU),with a focus on relationships with institutions external to Johns Hopkins.

With a direct reporting relationship to JHM SVP for Patient Safety and Quality, this role will have high visibility and accountability with JHU partners including academic and community division hospitals, clinical departments, the Technology Innovation Center and Johns Hopkins International.

Roles & responsibilities:

This role will meet and develop tailored strategic learning and development strategies with health system executives, ministries of health, and other government leaders. The Director will:

  1. Identify and develop non-research, non-grant sources of support to advance the mission and programs of the Armstrong Institute;
  2. Develop business models that support the transfer of Hopkins’ knowledge and inventions to people and organizations across the world to improve patient outcomes and the value of care;
  3. Develop programs and services that market and brand the Armstrong Institute as a national and global leader in improving patient safety and healthcare quality.
  4. Develop relationships with external national and international stakeholders in patient safety and healthcare quality. The former would include federal and state governmental and legislative bodies, professional associations, accrediting agencies, patient safety and other health care organizations, educational and research institutions, health care manufacturers, patient organizations, and other non-governmental organizations. The latter would also include WHO and its regional offices, ministries of health, and international organizations.
  5. Develop collaborative networks with key groups of stakeholders around consensus building, policy making and establishing best practices.
  6. Guide the Armstrong Institute in collaborations on national and international campaigns.

The Director will also:

  1. Oversee strategic objective performance, business development, and new service line development and implementation.
  2. Initiate and direct short and long-range program planning, including development of new programs and maturation of technology licensing opportunities.
  3. Evaluate existing programs for effectiveness and value; make recommendations for improvement and/or modifications.
  4. Proactively identify emerging issues by researching “best practices” and develop recommendations for new collaborative and business initiatives.

Allocation of Effort

Support for these duties will be approximately 20-30% FTE. Additional support will need to be obtained in the form of internal funding, external sponsored contracts or grants or internal/external contract funding.

A Ph.D. or M.D. (or foreign equivalents), along with relevant postdoctoral experience, is required.

  1. As a trusted advisor to key leaders, the role requires exceptional communication skills matched with demonstrated integrity, self-motivation, analytical skills and emotional intelligence.
  2. Demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary research teams.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work across university divisions in conducting research.
  4. Sustained research record commensurate with appointment to a senior faculty position in the School of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University.
  5. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including scholars, policymakers and practitioners.
  6. Demonstrated ability to secure sponsored funding.
  7. Experience managing multiple tasks and budgeting time and resources appropriately

Internal candidates should have successfully reached the faculty rank of Associate Professor within a Johns Hopkins University department. External candidates must possess the education and experience to be credentialed as an Associate Professor rank, or higher, within The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
