Director, Integrated Marketing

Purpose of Position:
The Director of Integrated Marketing, for the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).


SAIS has recently reimagined its flagship degree in international affairs, added new degree programs including several online programs, and is preparing to move its DC campus in 2023 from its current Dupont Circle location to its new home at 555 Pennsylvania Ave. It is an exciting time at the school and this role will be critical in helping to accelerate our efforts across the international relations education landscape by working closely with internal units and collaborating closely cross-functionally to align our marketing efforts with 21st century needs with respect to the highly competitive and growing graduate school landscape. This position would be based at the Washington, DC campus and is not a remote role.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Marketing, Communications and Community Engagement, the Director of Integrated Marketing is responsible for developing and executing integrated marketing strategies, branding and positioning for all SAIS academic programs across its three campuses (Washington, Bologna and Nanjing). In collaboration with Global Enrollment and Recruitment, Academic Affairs and other key internal units, this position will help to drive enrollment and elevate and retain SAIS’ position as a global brand and top tier graduate school of international affairs.

The Director of Integrated Marketing is directly responsible for leading all integrated marketing strategy and execution with primary responsibility for the planning, development, and implementation of marketing and engagement strategies and brand awareness efforts for all global admissions and recruitment, academic degree programs, and global careers efforts.


The Director of Integrated Marketing will seek to elevate marketing metrics and other assessment tools to determine target market demographics and behavior, and to measure the success of marketing vehicles; determine market niche and segmented markets; and identify market dynamics, patterns, behaviors and competitors to support overall marketing strategy. This position will work in partnership with SAIS colleagues and leaders to develop marketing strategies and campaigns that highlight the important programs and people of Johns Hopkins-SAIS’ while managing and maintaining the School’s image and brand identity.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties and responsabilities of the position include:

Marketing

  • Develop global marketing strategies, plans and execution by degree and non-degree programs to ensure recruitment and retention marketing efforts for prospective students across all traditional and digital mediums and optimal messaging for the appropriate target audience.

  • Ensure strategies, plans and execution are highly integrated with other marketing functions including creative, communications, events and marketing operations

  • Develop and execute against conversion best practices, managing and benchmarking against competitive research and analysis

  • Lead utilization and analysis of CRM platform for prospective student marketing and communications, guiding the process of competitive analysis and market research to help inform marketing strategies. Analyze marketing plans and performance using KPI’s, ROI analysis and apply learning in new planning

Advertising

  • Manage all SAIS advertising campaigns, including strategy development, campaign implementation and measurement/analysis across all digital and traditional platforms

Website Management

  • Responsible for the content and management of the SAIS website including oversight for:

  • Utilizing and optimizing SEO/SEM, email campaigns, user experience, digital advertising, promotions, and social media experience to build brand/program awareness, generate leads and engagement with students and alumni

  • Manage all digital marketing channels (e.g. website, email campaigns, social media, etc.) to ensure brand consistency

  • Ensuring flawless execution of content and marketing across every department including optimizing SEO and managing external web vendor to ensure website employs best practices, is up-to-date, addresses the needs of the audience,

  • Leading full understanding competitive landscape, monitor, report and provide marketing insights

  • Manage marketing and advertising budget, vendor relationships and invoice processing in consultation with the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure alignment with strategic goals and priorities.

  • Direct Leadership and Management

    • Effectively manage 3-4 direct reports including Associate Director for Marketing, Social Media Manager and Webmaster

    • Manage vendor relationships of web and marketing agencies

    • Make recommendations for and manage respective budget items related to marketing, web agency budgets and ensure alignment with department goals

    • Serve as unit’s marketing liaison with key teams including Global Admissions and Recruitment, Academic Affairs and Global Careers

    Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification:
    Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Master's degree preferred. Five years of related experience required. 7-10 years marketing, brand positioning, and digital marketing experience strongly preferred; higher education marketing experience highly desirable; Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Knowledge and Skills:

    • Excellent ability to develop and execute against strategic integrated multichannel marketing plans
    • Ability to clearly articulate (written and verbal) strategies and plans to achieve goals
    • Extensive experience in optimizing marketing processes from brand/program awareness to conversion to retention
    • Strong understanding of how to implement and integrate digital marketing channels including SEO/SEM, emails/CRM platforms, web content management, analytics; knowledge of Slate platform highly desirable
    • Exceptional knowledge of current digital and integrated marketing tools and tactics, and trends
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize data and glean actionable insights that inform strategy
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Collegial self-starter who can take the initiative, work proactively both independently and as part of a marketing communications team
    • Results-oriented with high standards for self and team
    • Proven track record of developing and leading direct reports, and providing support to internal teams and external partners
    • Strong project management and organizational skills
    • Experience managing a budget, interdepartmental and external vendor relationships
    • Demonstrated experience effectively leading and directly managing teams.
    • Demonstrated understanding of, and appreciation for, cultural practices and global perspectives

    The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
