Job Summary:Reporting to the director of security, the assistant director of security coordinates life safety, security, switchboard, and office systems, and is a key member of Colby’s security management team. The assistant director of security supervises and schedules dispatchers and officer shifts including athletics, social, and special events and is backup to the associate director for the Access Card System and CCTV systems. The assistant director works closely with the director on departmental training, communications, and the enforcement of security policies and procedures. This is an evening position, Tuesday through Saturday, with additional responsibilities for special events. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Establish unit goals and objectives with a focus of continuous improvement; evaluate unit performance and refine approaches as needed
  • Supervise dispatchers, officers, shuttle drivers, reserves, and student employees working student security and driving the Jitney
  • Interact with students in individual and group settings to serve as a positive presence on campus, embody community policing, and form professional relationships
  • Represent the department at meetings and on committees; collaborate and maintain strong relationships with varied departments and groups
  • Schedule 24/7 operation and event coverage, sometimes with short notice
  • Develop, administer, and communicate policies, procedures, and standards; recommend future changes
  • Create, deliver and document training sessions within the department and across campus
  • Assist in maintaining operational relationships with external agencies and stakeholders
  • Help maintain access, security, life safety, CCTV imaging, switchboard, and office systems; analyze and recommend additions and changes to all systems
  • Update computer files and systems for departmental logs, incident reports, and reporting functions
  • Compile reports, prepare presentations, and gather data for the College and Department of Education, specifically for the Clery Act
  • Guide office staff in providing services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Serve on-call in case of assistance and emergency
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
  • Substantial administrative and supervisory experience in security operations
  • Experience with electronic ID and facility-access systems
  • Proficient with a variety of technology and computer applications including Windows, WordPress, and Google
  • Advanced First Aid or Emergency Medical Technician experience desired
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, establish priorities, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community
  • Proven flexibility at adapting to unanticipated problems, stress, or conflicts
  • Demonstrated work history functioning effectively under pressure and making decisions in emergency situations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate with various levels of employees and management
  • Must be organized, take initiative, and utilize strong time management skills
  • Proven ability to utilize discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Strong work ethic and drive to resolve issues through action and ownership of results
  • Display balanced intellect that combines analysis, experience, and perspective in making decisions and providing information to others
  • Proven ability to think critically and act logically under pressure, to evaluate critical situations, solve problems, and make decisions
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements

General open office and outdoor campus environment. Position involves frequent movement, including walking, biking, bending, twisting, occasional lifting, and computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion. Position requires ability to direct departmental activities under emergency and other difficult circumstances. Position also requires evening and weekend work, on call for assistance in emergencies.
