Position Summary:

A Research Specialist position is available at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) in the laboratory of Dr. Ei Terasawa for an ambitious and highly motivated individual for research in Neuroscience. The laboratory specializes in cell-molecular studies in hypothalamic neurons of nonhuman primates. The successful applicant for this position will actively participate in the research and will be responsible for following approved animal, biosafety, and radio-imaging protocols.

The applicant will initially be introduced to the standard procedures used for animal care and handling at the WNPRC, and will be required to obtain a UW animal care and handling certification from Research Animal Resources and Compliance (RARC), as well as complete the radiation safety certification from the UW Safety Department. Additional relevant training and certification may be required as needed.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

BS/BA in a biological science or related field required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Must have worked or interned in a research laboratory. Must be able to work with animals in vivo as part of a team, as well as with stem cell cultures in vitro. Experience in handling and manipulation of nonhuman primates, such as rhesus macaques, and an ability to obtain venous blood samples from nonhuman primates preferred.

Excellent verbal and written skills and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required. Prior experience with web-based databases preferred. Must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team. Candidate should have an understanding of research principles and regulations, be detail oriented, and possess excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Recent graduates who wish to advance to a higher education are encouraged to apply.

Applicants with relevant work experience may qualify for higher level Research Specialist title and compensation. Official title and starting salary will be determined at time of job offer, based on previous relevant work experience.

License or Certificate:

BL2+ and radiation safety certification will be acquired upon hire.

Additional Information:

*Must be TB negative.
*Successful candidate will be required to provide written documentation to University Health Services showing one of the following: 1) receipt of measles vaccination; 2) laboratory evidence of immunity to measles; or 3) laboratory confirmation of measles disease. Individuals without the aforementioned documentation will need to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, employee may need to be immunized.
*Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication.
*A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
*A one-year period of evaluation will be required.

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. WNPRC's mission is to increase the understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. To accomplish this, the WNPRC helps discover treatments, preventions and cures for human disease; generates new knowledge of primate biology, from the molecular and whole animal levels to the understanding of primate ecosystems; facilitates research progress by providing expertise, resources and training to scientists worldwide; and collects primate information and disseminates to the research community and to the public.
