Title: Assistant Dean (First Generation & Bobcat First)





Position Purpose:

The Assistant Dean will be responsible for leading comprehensive and holistic support services and programming for first-generation students, including directing all aspects of the Bobcat First cohort program. This hands-on position provides direct support for an increasingly diverse Bates College community utilizing excellent customer service skills. The Assistant Dean will develop, implement, and assess programming that addresses first-generation student needs, interests, and concerns, with attention to intersectionality. Working collaboratively with other professional and student staff in the OIE, the Assistant Dean is charged with creating a holistic, student-centered environment that cultivates community and belonging, provides resources for students’ personal and academic success, and connects students to opportunities for campus engagement. Additional responsibilities include: serving as a Student Support Advisor and case manager as assigned; supervising student workers, as assigned; and serving as a resource and partner for on-campus constituencies supporting first-generation students and engaged in equity, anti-racism, intersectionality, and social justice work.

Job Duties:

  • Develop, implement, and assess dynamic and holistic programming to foster a sense of community and belonging, facilitate student success, and assist in personal and academic development of first-generation students.
  • Assure equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism as central to their work and the delivery of services to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Oversee all aspects of the Bobcat First cohort program (BFirst), including the pre-orientation program.
  • Build partnerships with Admissions and Student Financial Services to smoothly transition first-generation students from admission to campus.
  • Serve as Student Support Advisor and case manager for first-generation students, including all BFirst students.
  • In partnership with the Associate Dean, design and implement BIPOC student programming, particularly around the intersection of BIPOC and first-generation identities.
  • Develop, implement, and assess a student financial literacy curriculum in conjunction with Student Financial Services.
  • Design and facilitate training for other Student Support Advisors to bolster inclusive advising practices.
  • Build and nurture partnerships with faculty, academic departments, academic support services, and the office of the dean of faculty to provide effective and coordinated programs to support academic, co-curricular, and personal success and development of first-generation students.
  • Be a visible and accessible presence in the OIE, including on nights and weekends as necessary.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Master’s degree required.

Experience

Minimum of 4 years of relevant, progressive professional experience in student support, orientation, and higher education programming.
Expertise in the field of student affairs and student-facing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice work.
Experience and demonstrated success with:
Program design and implementation, with special emphasis on programs for first-generation students;
Supporting, coaching, and advising students with a variety of identities and lived experiences;
Working with minoritized student populations;
Producing intersectional programming for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, South Asian, and other students of color; and
Crisis management.

Skills and Knowledge

Commitment to working with first-generation students, their families, and campus support structures to facilitate their academic, co-curricular, and personal success and development.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and student privacy as appropriate.
Effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and the ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
Solid understanding of the academic and social challenges experienced by first-generation students and other marginalized students in a college environment.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
Proficiency in basic data management systems, computer applications, and social media platforms.
Ability and willingness to work weekends and evenings.
Demonstrated commitment to practices in equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism and to serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.
