A post-doctoral position conducting research investigating links between knee osteoarthritis and central changes in the nervous system is available in the laboratory of Dr. Kyle D. Allen ( , This post-doctoral position will work collaboratively with the laboratory of Dr. Marcelo Febo to evaluate how progression of knee osteoarthritis effects signs of brain aging in preclinical models. In addition to research training, opportunities in career development will be available through training programs at the Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence. The position is for an initial one-year appointment and has the potential to be renewed on a year-by-year basis based on performance and funding availability. Drs. Allen and Febo have a long history of NIH funding and training professionals who have entered and succeeded in both academic and industry positions.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, related biomedical science area, or a related field of engineering. Applicants must have experience with manuscript preparation and submission. Experience with grant writing and mentoring students is not required, but is desirable.

Dr. Allen’s research focuses on understanding complex interactions between different physiologic systems within the context of knee osteoarthritis. The centering question for his laboratory is how does the degeneration of the articular joint lead to joint pain and disability. The laboratory employs multiple scientists with broad expertise across medical research; thus, applicants must be able and willing to collaborate with other lab members with a broad range of scientific expertise that spans biomechanics, biomaterials, neural engineering, image processing, behavioral analyses, and medical imaging.

For this position, prior experience in small animal models and behavioral analysis is preferred, while knowledge in medical imaging and machine learning is desirable.

Start date is flexible up to September 30, 2021.
