Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning Technician I is directly responsible to the HVAC Foreman. The Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning Technician I installs, inspects, operates and repairs HVAC equipment for preserving food, making ice, cooling water, and air conditioning college buildings.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Must be able to learn, understand, and operate a computerized energy management system (EMS).
  2. Installs, inspects and operates heating and refrigeration machinery and cooler and freezer units, and insures that they are functioning properly.
  3. Supervises and assists other HVAC Technician I in performing jobs requiring more than one mechanic.
  4. Reads thermometers and gauges and records readings in logbook or other forms.
  5. Regulates refrigerant and suction valves on pipelines to maintain desired degree of compression by increasing or decreasing amount of refrigerant.
  6. Listens to operation of HVAC machinery to detect malfunctioning such as piston slap, noisy valves, connecting-rod knocks, rattling supports, etc.
  7. Tests operation of thermostats and insure proper operation.
  8. Notifies supervisor to send/order parts which cannot be repaired readily to manufacturer or to repair shop.
  9. Periodically examines air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, checking vacuum and pressure of cooling units, observing condition of electric motors, cleaning dirt and lint from motors and condensers, and adding or removing refrigerant to adjust vacuum or pressure.
  10. Operates new refrigeration systems for several hours, adjusting thermostats and valves to insure proper control of freezing action.
  11. Cleans coils and tubes on chilled water, hot water, condensers coils, etc.
  12. Trouble shoots and repairs inoperative refrigerators, chillers, window units, ice makers, water fountains, freezers, etc.
  13. Ability to properly use measuring equipment such as volt meter, ampere meter, refrigerant leak detector, OHMS meter, vacuum pump, etc.
  14. Ability to work from oral instructions and blueprints.
  15. Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  16. Follows manufacturer’s preventive maintenance schedules and recommends changes.
  17. Will perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Physical Plant.


Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.

  • Must have the ability to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions in English and Spanish.

  • Must have completion of a one-(1) year technical training in air conditioning and refrigeration and two years of work experience in the air conditioning field.

  • Must have three (3) years' experience installing, operating and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.

  • Employees driving an LC Motor vehicle must have a Valid State Driver’s License.

  • Certified as a Type I & II Technician.

  • Registered as an HVACR Technician by the State of Texas.



Preferred:

  • Some training in chiller water based industrial HVAC system.
  • Work experience in chiller water based industrial HVAC systems.
  • Experience with computerized HVAC systems.
  • Certified as a Type III Technician.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of air conditioning practices;

  • Some knowledge of life safety code, National Electric Code, E.P.A. regulations and basic computer software.



Additional Information

Supervision Exercised

Lead and supervise subcontractors from time to time in routine maintenance and systems troubleshooting and repairs (during office hours and while on call).

Supervision Received

Directly dispatching and project assignment from HVAC Foreman.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a variety of settings.
Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling, and at times subject to stooping, crawling, and climbing.
May need to lift heavy objects of up to 50 pounds
May be exposed to a variety of temperatures, noise, moving mechanical parts, or chemicals.
Specific vision abilities may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to focus.

Work Environment

Work beyond a normal workday and at varied work locations that may include the college south campus, which may include traveling from and to each campus.
Work outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
Be exposed to noise and vibration from operating machinery.

Safety

Required to work safely and follow safety rules.

Report unsafe working conditions and behavior.

Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Special Conditions

Immediate supervisor may assign other duties. May be required to work outside regular working hours, as needed.

May be required to work at a different college work site or campus as needed.
