Director of Residence Life and Housing

The State University of New York (SUNY) College at Cortland seeks applications for a director of residence life and housing. This position is a full-time member of the professional central staff team that provides leadership, direction and supervision for a 3,300+ bed residence life and housing program.

The director of Residence Life and Housing reports to the vice president for Student Affairs, and provides strategic leadership and management to the SUNY Cortland Residential Life and Housing Office, which provides on campus housing for approximately 3300 students. The Office supports an inclusive, safe, and respectful campus culture designed to foster personal growth, responsibility, and transformative learning. The director is a critical member of the Student Affairs Cabinet and is responsible for the development and implementation of departmental mission, goals, and assessment in alignment with those of the Division and the University. The director will anticipate, develop, and implement best practices that are responsive to trends regarding student issues, programming, and administrative operations.

The director will monitor and provide direction as needed for the management of housing assignments, staff selection, training and evaluation. The director will work with senior leadership across the campus including campus partners in Facilities and Operations Services, University Police, Cortland Auxiliary Services, Multicultural Life and Diversity, International Programs and Admissions. Management areas will include fiscal management of departmental budget, assessment, program development, student learning outcomes, housing contracts, facility management and operations, housing assignments, marketing, employee development, and office management. The director will provide senior level leadership to housing facilities renovation and new construction projects.

 

A master's degree is required along with seven years of experience with progressive responsibility within a comprehensive residence life program in a higher education setting including mid-level management and supervision of student staff; experience recruiting, hiring, training, development, supervision and retention of professional staff; demonstrated commitment to fostering an equitable, diverse and inclusive work environment; experience with development and assessment of co-curricular programming.; developing policies and procedures; and managing housing numbers, contracts and projections. Critical knowledge includes demonstrated understanding of technology applications, including housing software and reporting; and demonstrated understanding of budget management for residence life and housing. Preference may be given to candidates with a master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, etc.); experience partnering with multiple college offices to benefit student success; more than ten years of residential life and housing management experience; budget management experience for comprehensive residence life program in a higher education setting or similarly complex organization; experience and demonstrated proficiency with technology applications, including housing software and reporting.
