Position Highlights:

The Honors College and Biosphere 2, in collaboration with the Biosystems Engineering Department, at the University of Arizona, invites applicants for a career-track faculty (non-tenure eligible) position in the core Honors Interdisciplinary faculty within the Department of Biosystems Engineering.  This position will have a particular emphasis on developing courses, unique experiences, and teaching in the expanding Honors College Environmental Grand Challenges (EGC) thematic area. This position will be a joint appointment between the Honors College and Biosystems Engineering with a majority appointment in the Department of Biosystems Engineering.  Biosphere 2, the Department of Biosystems Engineering, and the Honors College share in the mission of supporting the generation of knowledge integral to our future earth resilience.  This is truly an interdisciplinary endeavor in which the experiential education of our next generation of scientists, engineers, economists, social scientists, and humanists towards this just cause is imperative.

Biosphere 2 is a world-class research, engineering, and education facility contributing to the University of Arizona’s mission and excellence in environmental science knowledge, generation, and dissemination. Biosphere 2 allows for unique science at scales relevant to understanding Earth and its future in the multiple research ecosystems under glass, which provide a unique control and measurement capacity. As a publicly accessible engineering and science facility, Biosphere 2 communicates the importance of STEM online and with 100,000 annual public visitors and thousands of K-12 students and educators.

The Biosystems Engineering department is uniquely positioned in both the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Engineering (COE). The department offers two-degree programs: an engineering degree, Biosystems Engineering, and a non-engineering degree, Biosystems Analytics & Technology.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The EGC thematic area is a collaboration with UArizona Biosphere 2 and other units on campus, as well as with community and global partners. The track comprises an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and solving global grand challenges, intended to provide knowledge and theory based in the sciences, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities for high-ability students interested in improving the quality of life for current and future generations. 

The duties and responsibilities of this faculty member will be

  • Lead and instruct in a new Honors interdisciplinary minor program being developed titled Future Earth Resilience.  This minor is focused on the idea that the human economy is nested within the global ecosystem and is both 1) reliant on natural systems as the ultimate source of all resources and 2) is the process by which resources and provisioning systems are maintained and/or allocated. 
  • Provide unique opportunities to engage students in creative, design-thinking approaches that align Earth systems realities with economic efficiencies to support an equitable quality of life for all our planet’s inhabitants.
  • Establish and create the Honors course offerings and pathway within Biosystems Engineering that both support the Honors interdisciplinary minor, but also support and recruit majors to Biosystems Engineering.
  • Teach multiple courses per year. Possible courses include teaching an introduction and/or capstone course for the new minor, development of residential multi-day experiences at Biosphere 2 (including week-long Alternative Spring Break offerings), teaching advanced electives appropriate for the theme, teaching small general education courses for the Honors College, Honors sections of courses in the Biosystems Engineering degree path, and assisting with the coordination of the project-based and/or capstone EGC experiences.
  • Assist with the coordination of Environmental Grand Challenges thematic area, and the valuable connections to Biosphere 2 and other relevant units.
  • Coordinate the new Honors interdisciplinary minor, Future Earth Resilience, and part of their teaching assignment(s) will be to instruct courses for this program.  
  • Collaborate with both units to better define what Honors means within the Biosystems Engineering curriculum and to work with faculty to develop Honors sections of key courses.

As a faculty member in Biosystems Engineering and the Honors College, the individual selected must have experience and expertise with inquiry and evidence-based instructional practices such as active and collaborative learning, and the integration of research as well as modern approaches to assessment and engaged learning.  

The position includes avenues for promotion to Associate or Full Professor, non-tenure eligible.

Additional duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in a STEM field

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate will

  • Hold a Ph.D. in a field that is well-suited to understanding and tackling global environmental challenges. Background and interests should focus on earth and environmental science, environmental and social justice, and related areas
  • A strong record of interdisciplinary and innovative teaching
  • Previous experience working with diverse and underrepresented communities
  • Previous success in collaborative interdisciplinary practice, research, or teaching
  • Previous teaching experience both in-person and online
  • Administrative and research experience
