Learning Specialist

The Office of Accommodations and Accessibility invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Learning Specialist to provide individualized, comprehensive, academic support to students enrolled in the Learning Support Program.

 Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Education, Special Education, Counseling, College Student Personnel, or related field. Experience working with adolescent or college aged students preferred. Background and experience in writing, editing, and researching college level papers and other written projects. Ability to provide emotional support for students struggling to adjust to college and refer to Counseling Services as appropriate. Must be able to communicate with and build positive relationships with all stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, and parents/guardians. Background in reading and literacy preferred. Computer competence and excellent time management skills required.

 Essential Functions:

  • Teach time management and organizational skills, as well as study skills and test-taking strategies.
  • Provide direct assistance with all aspects of the writing process.
  • Assist students with transition to college and development of self-advocacy skills.
  • Review student documentation and conduct intake with students to evaluate learning needs and to design and implement appropriate accommodations and services to support the student academically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Provide academic advisement assisting with course selection and make referrals to academic advisors regarding major/minor requirements.
  • Work with faculty and staff to provide appropriate accommodations and monitor academic progress.
  • Communicate with parents as needed to support students’ success.
  • Refer students to campus resources including, but not limited to, the Writing Center, the Academic Learning Center, the Center for Advising and Academic Services, the Math Lab, Counseling Services, the Health and Wellness Center, and Career Services.
  • Assist in the development and execution of programs and workshops, which support students in the Learning Support Program and educate faculty and staff regarding disability related issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.
