Department Statement

Haven, Colgate University’s Sexual Violence Resource Center, opened in October 2016. During the prior academic year, students joined with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop the plans for Haven along with the need for enhanced sexual violence response and education on campus. Haven is now the central location of clinical treatment for survivors, sexual assault education and prevention, and collaboration with others to improve our survivor-centric responses to sexual violence. The Associate Director, Survivor Support Services, will lead Haven in collaboration with the Director, Counseling & Psychological Services.


As Associate Director, Survivor Support Services, this position is primarily responsible for providing, managing and evaluating confidential, trauma-informed, counseling/psychological services provided to students through Haven and in collaboration with Counseling & Psychological Services. The Associate Director, in collaboration with the Director, is responsible for the management and oversight of Haven, the sexual assault response center.

The incumbent is accountable for providing advice, counsel, and expertise on trauma, especially those related to sexual assault, across the University. Areas of focus include responsibility for:
● providing high-quality, culturally relevant, trauma-focused treatment measured by overall improvement in symptoms and client self-report
● counseling students through individual and group therapy
● responding to students in a timely manner with high overall satisfaction for clinical services
● providing on-call support for after-hours mental health needs, appropriate and effective crisis response in collaboration with the Counseling & Psychological Services team
● consulting and providing information to other administrative staff within limits of confidentiality
● confidentiality maintaining clinical documentation and other records in compliance with professional standards
● upholding ethical procedures, and in compliance with state law
● collaborating with others to ensure continuity of care between on-campus and off-campus resources regarding individual student mental health care
● ensuring that all services consider equity and social justice issues
● outreach to campus community
● assessing student mental health through clinical interview and symptom inventories, as needed
● utilizing excellent survivor response protocols as well as strong implementation of sexual violence community education and prevention
● establishing and maintaining community relationships in order to offer students appropriate off-campus responses and referral options
● supervising of staff member and/or student interns
● strategic planning of sexual assault response and prevention initiatives, with current knowledge of state and federal legislation as it pertains to sexual violence topics in higher education environments maintaining a high level of confidentiality

As part of this role, the incumbent is also responsible for the following:
● effectively recruiting, training, and supervising staff and students
● managing Haven technology resources within department, in collaboration with Associate Director of Counseling Center
● as required, managing and overseeing Haven programs and outreach events
● contributing to University policies related to assigned areas
● budgeting through regular updating, maintenance, and projection
● as required, responsible for providing effective advice, counsel, and leadership on University committees

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

● Licensed in NY, or license eligible in NY State within 1 year
● Trauma-informed clinical experience

Preferred Qualifications

● Experience with young adults, adolescents, or college populations
● Commitment to social justice advocacy and diversity work
● Interest or experience in leading group therapy
● Experience in providing community education/training on trauma and sexual violence
● Demonstrated ability to collaborate with campus partners and multidisciplinary teams
● Evidence of ability to coordinate initiatives/programs on a team
● Interest or experience in strategic planning and long-term goal setting of department and initiatives
● Experience in crisis response and clinical treatment of general mental health disorders


● Minimum of a Master’s Degree, in field such as health education, health promotion, public health, sociology, mental health counseling, social work, clinical/counseling psychology
