Title: Associate Dean/Director of the Office of Intercultural Education
The Associate Dean will be responsible for providing strategic vision and leadership for the Office of Intercultural Education (OIE). This hands-on position provides direct support for an increasingly diverse Bates College community utilizing excellent customer service skills. The Associate Dean will manage, lead, and develop a dynamic and high-functioning team of professional and student staff, charged with creating a holistic, student-centered environment that cultivates community, connection, and belonging, provides educational opportunities and resources for students’ success, and facilitates engagement with the broader campus community. The Associate Dean will oversee and support the team in designing, implementing, and assessing a set of robust, cohesive, and integrated programs that foster the academic, co-curricular, personal, and postgraduate success of BIPOC, LGBTQIAP2+, and first-generation students. Additional responsibilities include: financial planning and operational budget oversight; developing partnerships across the institution; representing the OIE on campus committees and working groups; serving as a resource and partner for on-campus constituencies engaged in anti-racism, intersectionality, and social justice work; and additional duties as assigned.
- Provide strategic vision and leadership for the Office of Intercultural Education (OIE), including developing short- and long-term strategic plans.
- Assure equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism as central to their work and the delivery of services to faculty, staff, and students.
- Lead and manage an effective student support team, including supervising and mentoring Assistant Deans and Program Coordinator and developing professional development plans for the entire team.
- Oversee and support the team in designing and implementing a set of cohesive and integrated programs and services that: Fosters the academic, personal, and post-graduate success of BIPOC, LGBTQIAP2+, and first-generation students; Facilitates community and connection among individual students, student organizations, and the broader institution; and Provides educational opportunities to BIPOC, LGBTQIAP2+, and first-generation students around critical issues of identity and representation.
- Develop partnerships across the institution (e.g., Academic Affairs, Admission, Advancement, Athletics, Counseling and Psychological Services, Equity and Inclusion, Purposeful Work) to advance the mission of the OIE and improve the student experience.
- Collaborate with the Office of Campus Life to develop and implement strategies to provide ongoing, structured support for identity-based student organizations.
- Partner with identity-based student organizations to provide community development and educational programming.
- Oversee the financial planning and budget management for the OIE. Serve as a critical liaison between college leadership and BIPOC, LGBTQIAP2+, and first-generation students.
- In collaboration with colleagues in Institutional Research, assess the needs of students and efficacy of programs to advance the mission of the OIE and improve the student experience.
- Be a visible and accessible presence in the OIE and serve as an informal mentor and adviser for students who use OIE services and attend its programs.
Master’s degree required.
Minimum of 8 years of relevant, progressive professional experience in student support, orientation, and higher education programming experience, including evidence of progressive successful management experience.
Expertise in the field of student affairs and student-facing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice work.
Demonstrated success in:
Leading and developing a team of professionals;
Overseeing the design, implementation, and facilitation of specialized programming;
Supporting, coaching, and advising students, particularly BIPOC, first-generation, LGBTQAIP2+, and other minoritized students;
Managing crisis situations; and
Building coalitions and partnerships across campus constituencies.
Skills and Knowledge
Commitment to working with BIPOC, first-generation, and LGBTQIAP2+ students, their families, and campus support structures to facilitate their academic, co-curricular, and personal success.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and student privacy as appropriate.
Effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and the ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
Solid understanding of the academic and social challenges experienced by LGBTQIAP2+, BIPOC and first-generation students in a college environment.
Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
Proficiency in basic data management systems, computer applications, and social media platforms.
Demonstrated commitment to practices in equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism and to serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and tact.
