Lighting and Sound Technician

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of the School of Music and Dance, and receiving work lead direction from the Dance Program Coordinator, the Lighting and Sound Technician receives general supervision and works independently to achieve specified outcomes. The Technician is responsible for the execution of sound and lighting for all stage and studio productions in the Dance Theater primarily, and other appropriate School of Music and Dance spaces as assigned. As the primary lighting and sound technician and chief electrical safety officer for the School of Music and Dance, the Technician must follow the National Electrical Code and California Title 8 (California OSHA) safety requirements for electrical installations. The Audio and Lighting Technician specializes in audio and electrical lighting systems, and provides production support to the Dance program, primarily and occasional assistance in the area of electrical lighting systems to the Music program. The Technician works from verbal and written instructions and is responsible for the organization of projects, managing parts and supplies, and the supervision of student assistants. The Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, repairing, and performing maintenance on lighting, sound and special effects equipment. Using creativity, ingenuity, technical abilities and knowledge of production goals and themes, the Audio and Lighting Technician creates, implements, and fabricates lighting, sound and special effects from designer and director specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute stage lighting and sound designs for the Dance program with a priority on health and safety.
  • Create, implement, and fabricate lighting, sound and special effects for Dance productions.
  • Set up, calibrate and operate lighting, projection and sound equipment for Dance productions.
  • Function as Lighting & Sound Crew Chief for all Dance student crews and coordinate with Dance Student Stage managers during all tech rehearsals.
  • Support lighting requests and provide lighting support in the Music Concert Hall.
  • Function as Electrical Safety Officer to ensure that the National Electrical Code and California Title 8 (CaIOSHA) safety requirements for electrical installations are followed.
  • Function as lead technician for live stream performances.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of all lighting, projection, sound systems and equipment in the Dance Theater, as well as lighting in the Music Concert Hall.
  • Provide expertise in the ordering of parts and supplies.
  • Perform regular inventory control of all equipment.
  • Provide lighting and sound for special events.
  • Train and supervise student crews and operate lighting, sound and video equipment.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of lighting and audio engineering for dance productions.
  • Ability to execute lighting and sound designs for dance productions.
  • Working knowledge of DMX systems and universes as well as Dante networks.
  • Knowledge of OBS and other streaming software.
  • Ability to live stream dance and music productions.
  • Thorough knowledge of basic electrical theory and safety.
  • Strong working knowledge of current lighting, sound and projection hardware as well as associated software applications.
  • Foundation knowledge of the National Electrical Code and California Title 8 (California OSHA) safety requirements for electrical installations.
  • Thorough knowledge of current ETC lighting control systems and digital audio consoles.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the methods and problems in multiple production specialties.
  • Ability to work within a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work with faculty and provide training and supervision to students involved in productions.
  • General knowledge of historical periods as they relate to the production specialty.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety measures and hazards related to theatre productions.
  • Ability to identify, select, and operate a variety of tools used to repair, maintain and modify lighting instruments, projectors, sound systems and rigging devices.
  • Thorough knowledge of safe practices of rigging and support systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of lighting and sound software applications and database management for inventory.
  • Must have strong oral communication skills and possess excellent customer service and public relations skills.


Required Qualifications

  • Professional training or applicable college coursework
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a B.A degree in Technical Theatre Arts/Drama may be considered
  • Ability to lift 50-60 pounds; climb to upper lighting catwalks and control spaces up 40 feet and higher; climb ladders and use personnel lifts up to 35 feet high.


Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A. degree in Technical Theatre Arts/Drama
  • Minimum of three years paid experience as a stage lighting and sound technician with demonstrated thorough knowledge of basic electrical theory and safety
  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of theatrical lighting and sound, and basic knowledge of television/film lighting
  • Demonstrated ability to execute lighting and sound installations for theatre and studio productions and workshops


Compensation

Classification: Performing Arts Technician II
Hiring Range: $3,489/month - $6,313/month
