About the Opportunity:
The Residence Director (RD) is an exempt 12-month, full-time, professional staff member in the Department of Housing and Residential Life. Residence Directors have direct responsibility for the effective administration and community development of one or more buildings housing a diverse population of 250-700 students. These buildings are served by a paraprofessional staff of 8-16, over whom the Residence Director has direct supervision. The Residence Director's primary purpose is to develop and maintain an environment conducive to social and intellectual growth as well as the academic success of resident students. This position's responsibilities include: creating and implementing co-curricular engagement within university housing, student staff supervision and development, housing and occupancy administration, student conduct, as well as collaborating with campus partners on overall facility and security management within the assigned residential area.
Residence Directors have offices located within residential areas on campus. Due to the physical layout of the campus and the residence halls, it is critical that these individuals are able to work autonomously and exercise excellent judgment in their areas of responsibility. All RDs participate in an on-call duty rotation and are often requested to assist other University offices and constituencies to help resolve various concerns. This position requires the individual to work non-traditional hours including evening hours and weekends to accommodate students engaged in co-op and during on-call responsibilities.
Due to the live-in requirements of the Residence Director position, the on-campus apartment provided must be the individual's primary residence and that person must remain actively engaged with students within their residential areas of responsibility.
From time to time, the University will close (usually for inclement weather). Under these circumstances, RDs will be expected to report to their offices during scheduled office hours and respond to issues/concerns in their areas. Due to the nature of the University and the Co-Op system that exists, the residential campus never closes. RD's may be required to serve on duty during holidays and breaks.
Summer responsibilities may be adapted to include working on special projects, assisting with External Events and Conference Housing, managing orientation housing, and supporting summer residential students.
Each Residence Director is an active participant on committees within the department. Residence Directors will be given a primary committee assignment and may be required to serve on additional projects, task forces, or search committees as needed.
The Residence Director is responsible for implementing protocol to address emergencies/ crises/ mental health issues including: eating disorders, self-harm incidents, alcohol and drug use/abuse/overdose, and Title IX prohibited offenses. Even when not on-call, the RD must appropriately refer student crises to on-call staff when brought to their attention, and they may be expected to respond to major campus crises (student death, building fire, etc.) provided they are on campus at the time.
The RD will participate in and facilitate dialogue and engagement efforts related to the needs of a diverse student and staff population. Additionally, they will support and contribute to the university's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The Residence Directors will be subject to a criminal background check.
The Residence Director can serve in this role for three years.
- Bachelors required and Master's Degree preferred in College
Student Development, Higher Education Administration or related
- Experience as a live-in professional or graduate assistant in a
residence hall setting preferred
- Effective supervision, administrative, organization, written
and oral communication skills
- Experience in conflict resolution and mediation
- Experience with application of student development theory in a
residence hall setting
- Experience working autonomously and ability to exercise
excellent time management and decision making skills in their areas
- Experience with and a commitment to working in a diverse,
- Experience with computer applications is required
