Associate Professor/Full Professor of Games

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Department of Art+Design in the College of Arts, Media and Design and the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University invites applications for a joint position in Games at the Associate Professor or Full Professor rank. We seek candidates with an international record of excellence in research and/or creative practice in one or more areas including but not limited to: HCI, algorithmic bias, game analytics, creative coding, experiential technologies, extended reality, interdisciplinary design, player psychology, generative design, art games, serious games, and interactive narrative. The ideal candidate should have a strong track record of interdisciplinary research and collaboration and must have a strong record of excellence in game design. The appointment will commence fall 2021.

The position is for Northeastern's main campus in Boston, which is located on the Avenue of the Arts, across from the Museum of Fine Arts and a short walk away from the historic Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. The university is renowned for interdisciplinary research, entrepreneurial spirit, experiential learning, and global connectedness. Northeastern has recently revealed a strategic plan to guide the university's course for the next ten years. (See:http://www.northeastern.edu/academic-plan/)

Khoury College has grown rapidly over the last five years in response to increased student demand at the BS, MS, and PhD levels and expects to continue this rapid growth for the next several years. It is a fast-moving, ambitious college with an underlying mission that is driven by the motto “CS for Everyone.” Khoury College is committed to diversity and inclusion in computer science. It aims to establish a computing population—students, faculty, researchers, and staff—that reflects today's global society. (See: https://www.khoury.northeastern.edu/)

The College of Arts, Media and Design is a collaborative, diverse community, moving from strength to strength, and acting as a catalyst for research, inspiration, and discovery across the University. It brings together a unique combination of disciplines, including Architecture, Art+Design, Communication Studies, Journalism, Media and Screen Studies, Music, and Theatre, and is home to two interdisciplinary research centers: the Center for the Arts and the Center for Design. (See: http://www.northeastern.edu/camd) The Department of Art+Design offers fast-growing Master's programs such as the MFA and MS in Information Design and Visualization, MS in Game Science and Design, and MS and MFA in Experience Design. The BS in Computer Science and Game Development and the MS in Game Science and Design are interdisciplinary degrees offered jointly between the College of Arts, Media and Design and the Khoury College of Computer and Information Sciences. (See: http://www.northeastern.edu/camd/artdesign/).

Games faculty engage in interdisciplinary research that spans collaborations within different fields, including design, computer science, health sciences, behavior science, and engineering. They have been successful in attracting funding from the National Science Foundation, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the National Institutes of Health, exhibiting their work at IndieCade and Ars Electronica, CHI and SIGGRAPH, and the Smithsonian's SAAM Arcade, and publishing in DiGRA, CHI, SIGGRAPH and FDG, among others. Teaching and research labs have recently been upgraded with the latest state-of-the-art equipment, and more investments in space are anticipated as we grow and expand our research and education. For details on game research and education at Northeastern University, see: https://games.northeastern.edu/

Responsibilities:
Candidates should be able to teach courses related to game design in our growing undergraduate and graduate degree programs: a BFA in Games, BS in Computer Science and Game Development, MS in Game Science and Design, PhD in Computer Science, and PhD in Interdisciplinary Design and Media. Candidates are moreover expected to have a leadership role in games on campus. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with other faculty to design and shape new interdisciplinary research clusters (on creative coding, for example) and PhD programs.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a PhD degree in Games, Design, HCI, Computer Science or closely related fields by appointment start date. Applicants considered for the rank of associate or full professor are expected to demonstrate a substantial history of excellence in teaching and scholarship, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, external funding, successful student supervision and mentorship, and service to the community. They must be poised to offer a significant contribution to the field of games at Northeastern as well as to the larger framework of design and digital technologies across the University.
