Richard L. Menschel Faculty Director, Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning
Harvard University invites applications for the position of Faculty Director of the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning. The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized leader in innovation in pedagogy, and have made high-impact contributions to the academic community, in areas such as (but not limited to) cutting-edge course development, curriculum development, program development, and advising and mentoring, with outstanding promise of continuing contribution. The Faculty Director will be appointed to an appropriate academic department or program in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences and have ongoing responsibility for teaching in its undergraduate curriculum. The Faculty Director will assume a leadership role in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) and be responsible for both articulating the centrality of inclusive pedagogies in our teaching mission and elevating the profile of pedagogy on campus. The Faculty Director will manage the alignment of the Center’s programming with the core mission of teaching excellence in the FAS. They will ensure that the Center’s diverse portfolio of programs and services is deeply connected to the priorities of key FAS stakeholders, including the development of all who teach in this Faculty. The Faculty Director will establish organizational mechanisms that ensure accountability to key stakeholders, particularly Harvard College and the GSAS.
The Faculty Director will collaborate with the leadership of the FAS, including the Deans of Harvard College and the GSAS, in establishing goals for the Bok Center, and with the Center’s staff will develop a full range of programs and services to achieve those goals. The Faculty Director and staff of the Bok Center will support the FAS faculty to develop inclusive pedagogy and equitable course design practices, which enables learning enriched by the full range of experiences, perspectives, and ideas in the classroom. The Faculty Director and staff of the Bok Center will support the FAS faculty in introducing into their courses new educational methods and tools, and assessment of their success in teaching undergraduate and graduate students. The Faculty Director and staff of the Bok Center will provide support for GSAS students to develop into innovative teachers and effective communicators. The Faculty Director will also broaden and deepen the Bok Center’s function as disseminator of relevant and significant research on teaching and learning within the FAS.
Working closely with the Executive Director of the Bok Center, who manages operations and the everyday work of the staff, the Faculty Director will be responsible for the organization and financial health of the Center. In addition, the Faculty Director will oversee research undertaken by Bok Center staff and will play a central role in guiding efforts to develop meaningful mechanisms for measuring the effectiveness of pedagogical innovations.
The Faculty Director will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. They will work closely with the academic deans of the FAS, including the Dean of Harvard College and the Dean of the GSAS, and will serve on standing committees of the faculty, as appropriate.
A PhD degree, a record of influence in national conversations about pedagogical innovation in higher education and demonstrated leadership and management skills are required.
The Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning
The Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning was established in 1975 to enhance the quality of undergraduate education in Harvard College. Originally named the Harvard-Danforth Center, in recognition of the Danforth Foundation grant that funded the Center at the outset, it was renamed in 1991 to honor former Harvard President Derek Bok, who championed the Center from its inception. Harvard's continuing support of the Center in the years following its founding reflects a deep belief that teaching and learning are central to the vitality and success of our great research enterprise.
