General Summary/Purpose:

The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology and Critical Care is seeking anenthusiastic, professional, and experienced individual in pediatric research. This position involves flexibility in working across projects.

The Sr. Research Nurse will work in collaboration with the Research Nurses, Program Managers and the Principal Investigators of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

This will include coordinating across projects including a multisite clinical trial of mobility in the pediatric intensive care unit and studies focused on pediatric sepsis, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and clinical outcomes research.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Act as lead coordinator for the Clinical Coordinating Center of multisite trials including organization of webinars, investigator meetings and close collaboration with site PIs.
  • Provides clinical and administrative nursing support for research trials, studies, and projects in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and pediatric perioperative environment.
  • Provides guidance and leadership to pediatric research nurses working in this environment.
  • Practices nursing per study protocol(s) and under the nursing scope of practice for the State of Maryland. Follows policies/procedures of local, Federal and ICH guidelines for good clinical practice, as appropriate.
  • Participate in developing SOP for one or more research studies and/or reviewing SOP's developed by pharmaceuticals or study groups.
  • Submit protocols and/or consent forms to IRB and ensures approval before consenting participants.
  • Facilitates and participates in screening, enrollment, obtaining informed consent, data and specimen collection, data entry, preparation of relevant data sets and/or databases.
  • Performs patient/research subject evaluations, administers medications and research instruments and collects data.
  • Reports any adverse events as required.
  • May run routine statistics for study.
  • Provides patient education related to study.
  • Follows-up with project participants in accordance with established standards and protocols.
  • May coordinate staffing or scheduling assignments.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline required.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • 2 years experience in the specialty or a related area required.
  • Acceptable completion of the JHH or BMC credentialing process is required within two weeks of start date.
  • Additional experience may substitute for bachelor's degree and related master's degree may be considered in lieu of some experience, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:Related 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for some experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree strongly preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must maintain current certification in all applicable JHU required training classes.
  • Must be willing to organize and conduct multisite meetings, attend meetings and provide study-specific education.
  • Didactic and interactive teaching experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills to interact with interprofessional colleagues, parents and children.
  • Must have strong organizational skills with ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Must be willing to travel 2-3 times per year outside Maryland.
  • Computer skills adequate in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and related software.
  • Completion of good clinical practice and ethical requirements.

  • Experience with organizational software preferred

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
