About the College/Unit/Department

Located in vibrant and historic Athens, Georgia, UGA’s College of Environment and Design is home to the oldest landscape architecture program in the Southeast and the largest BLA program in the U.S. The College houses accredited BLA and MLA programs as well as a Master of Historic Preservation, a Master of Urban Planning and Design, a Doctorate of Environmental Planning and Design, and certificate programs including Environmental Ethics, Cultural Landscape Conservation, and Historic Preservation. There is a strong spirit of collegiality and a wide range of research interests within its large and diverse faculty. The BLA and MLA programs within the College consistently rank among the top programs in the U.S. The College’s global presence includes regular programs at UGA’s campus in Cortona, Italy, and a strong working relationship with Nanjing Forestry University in Nanjing, China, and Beijing Forestry University in Beijing, China. Position Summary

The College of Environment and Design ( CED ) at The University of Georgia invites applications for one or two positions at the rank of Assistant Professor or full-time Lecturer. The successful candidates must begin August 1, 2021.

The University and the College have a long history of local, state, and international engagement; the successful candidate will be expected to participate in this ongoing endeavor by participating in committees at these levels. Service contributions within the College and University are also expected.

Additional Requirements

All Candidates must have a terminal master’s degree ( MLA, MArch, MHP, or MFA ) or a PhD in planning and design or related field.

Successful appointment as a tenure-track Assistant Professor will require multiple areas of expertise: specifically, in design thinking, and design communication and technology, with additional expertise in one or more of the following areas: historic preservation, urban planning, engineering, ecology, plant materials, design studio, hand graphics, or construction and clear evidence of an existing or emerging area of scholarship as evidenced in publications, creative activities, grants or contracts, and/or professional service. A PhD or Doctor of Design is strongly preferred. Successful appointment as a non-tenure track Lecturer will require the ability to teach in the one or more of the listed areas of expertise described above as demonstrated by at least 2 semesters of instruction experience. The position of Lecturer is defined as a 100% teaching and service position, and is annually renewable. The successful lecturer candidate can expect to teach between 6 and 8 classes (18-24 credit hours) per academic year. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Candidates with an accredited MLA degree, or an accredited BLA degree with a terminal degree in an allied design discipline are preferred. Candidates with a demonstrated track record of written and graphic publications, awards, design practice, and professional licensure are highly desired.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

The successful candidate will have the following:

Teaching:
• Teach a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses in design thinking, and design communication and technology, with additional expertise in one or more of the following areas: historic preservation, urban planning, engineering, ecology, plant materials, design studio, hand graphics, or construction.
• Possess a passion for teaching and be enthusiastic mentors. In particular, the CED seeks individuals who are great collaborators who will engage in interdisciplinary scholarship across the university and nation. We seek candidates who will take action to promote the highest standards of teaching, research, and service to the college.

Design Thinking:
• Teach design thinking as a means for problem solving across disciplines and will be expected to develop and seek university approval to offer a new design thinking course as part of the general education core at UGA . This course will be offered at least annually.

Design Communication and Technology:
• The ability to identify and select data appropriate for design inquiry, the ability to conduct analysis and interpretation of data in a critical manner, and verbally and visually communicate data-based insights. Ideal candidates will be able to utilize data resources (online or other) and use mapping and visualization software to weave together written and graphic communication. For example, successful candidates will be fluent in higher-level design tools such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, SketchUp, Rhino, and Lumion, and be prepared to foster student success in use of these programs for production of design documents.
• Additional areas of expertise such as historic preservation, urban planning, engineering, plant materials, ecology, design studio teaching, construction, and hand graphics are desired.
• Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate expertise in multiple areas and be able to support teaching needs across undergraduate and graduate programs.
