The College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities ( CASSH ) includes departments and programs in the humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary studies, as well departments in the School of Visual and Performing Arts ( VPA ). CASSH / VPA continues the established liberal studies tradition of providing curricula leading to the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree.

CASSH / VPA is dedicated to providing quality innovative instruction and creative learning experiences which prepares students for future careers and education. More broadly, such learning allows students to continue to develop meaningful, responsible lives. Position Summary

The Department of Global Cultures and Languages at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse—a department committed to high-impact pedagogical practices, diversity, equity, content-based instruction, and cultural competency— invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Spanish—Cultural Studies/World Language Education at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 31, 2020.

The successful candidate will design and teach courses in Spanish at all levels of the program. Responsibilities in World Language Education may include teaching World Language Teacher Education and methods courses, pre-student teaching field experience courses, or student teaching supervision.

All faculty in Global Cultures and Languages at UW-La Crosse teach 12 credits (3-4 courses) per semester. In addition, faculty at UW La Crosse advise undergraduate students, participate in service activities at departmental, college, and university levels and maintain a progressing research trajectory.

This position is affiliated with the School of Education, Professional, and Continuing Education ( EPC ) and the dean of the EPC will provide feedback regarding hiring and personnel reviews. School of Education affiliated faculty are expect¬¬ed to be engaged in service and scholarly activities that inform and enhance the work they do with prospective teachers. Some additional work hours outside the academic school year may be required in order to align duties with the PK-12 school year. School of Education affiliated faculty also collaborate with the Department of Educational Studies on advising and curriculum related issues.

General position summary statement for UWL faculty positions:
Under general supervision of department chair, a person in this position is responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, and advising students. In addition to preparing for and holding classes [face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online], teaching involves maintaining currency in the content area related to the teaching assignment, evaluating students’ work, assessing student outcomes, maintaining appropriate records, and holding office hours. The individual is expected to maintain an active, on-going program of scholarship appropriate to the discipline. In addition, this individual will provide service to the department, college, and university and is likely expected to provide service to the community and/or the profession. Other duties may be assigned by the chair or dean.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.

Candidates for the appointment should have or be near to completing a doctorate degree in either Spanish, Cultural Studies, Second Language Acquisition, or a related field by the start date. Degree must be earned by the first personnel review, no later than May 15, 2021.

Successful applicants must have relevant experience teaching Spanish to undergraduate students and a minimum of 3 years teaching experience in U.S. PK-12 schools or equivalent.

Applicants also will have demonstrated ability to teach and model culturally relevant pedagogy and inclusive practices, including global perspectives and content in instruction and maintain an active research agenda that informs their work both in Spanish studies and as a teacher educator.

Preferred Qualifications

We are interested in hiring an innovative teacher-scholar with a broad competence in cultural studies who is able to make contributions to our curriculum in areas such as: Gender and Sexuality Studies, Indigenous Studies, Migration Studies, Race Studies, Social Justice, and /or Transatlantic Studies.

The ability to develop outreach projects and service-learning education, design local and international engagement and education opportunities, and / or incorporate undergraduate students in their research activities is desirable.

Experience with standards-based teacher preparation and performance-based assessments (e.g. edTPA, InTASC standards) is also desirable.
