Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities
Perform behavioral work with rodents and study nicotinic receptors in the brain by using in vivo models. Design and conduct behavioral studies (evaluate rats and mice in acute and chronic pain tests, such as tail-flick, CCI model and carrageenan test). Measure spontaneous activity, rotarod test, rectal temp. Evaluate animals in conditioned place-preference model. Administer drugs i.v., i.t., i.c.v. and s.c. Design and conduct tolerance and dependence studies (chronic administration). Data reduction, statistical analysis, graphic presentation. Serve as the lab’s chemical hygiene officer, to coordinate waste management and disposal, chemical inventory upkeep, etc. Lead all IACUC and safety & risk management inspections. General lab maintenance, library work. Breed transgenic mice and perform genotyping, when needed.
Minimum Hiring Standards
Required: previous research lab experience (as student or employee); experience handling and conducting research using laboratory animals; general lab skills (weighing, making solutions, etc.); willingness to learn and use pain and behavioral models; good communication skills; ability to work in a diverse environment.
Preferred Hiring Standards
Highly preferred: bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or closely related field; experience with behavioral and pain model assays; experience preparing and administering medications; experience with sterile technique; skill in data entry and analysis.
