Laney College is one of four, two-year colleges, maintained by the Peralta Community College District, located near the urban center of Oakland.  The 60-acre campus is located near the Oakland Museum, the Henry J. Kaiser Center Convention Center, and within blocks of Lake Merritt.  It is the largest of the four campuses with a population of 12,000 students.  The College serves as a community and cultural center that provides various educational programs and services that assist adults of diverse communities in facing the social, economic, and personal challenges of a changing society.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Provides direct services and clinical care including mental health assessment, treatment, and education;

• Develops and plans a Mental Health Services Program and coordinates Health Services activities such as:

• Personal, emotional, and crisis counseling and clinical care of students with mental health needs

• Mental Health services outreach activities,

• Trainee, practicum, and Internship programs

• Wellness education and training

• Monitors the clinical practice according to Health Services and College and District policies and procedures, as well as applicable County, • State, and Federal regulations, licenses, and standards to ensure compliance and the quality of care provided in the student health services program;

• Maintains a secure, accessible system of confidential medical and mental health records in accordance with applicable standards of practice and State and Federal laws;

• Supervises and trains graduate or post-graduate level trainees or interns;

works with the Campus Crisis Committee intervention services, training, and response;

• Provides education and consultation to faculty, staff, and administrators with concerns about student mental health issues;

• Represents Wellness Services on college and district committees;

• Participates in outreach and promotion of campus wellness services;

• Conducts workshops for  students related to health, stress, and mental health related topics;

• Prepare reports, surveys, and other documents as required by the area administrator;

• Conducts on going evaluation of programs, staff and student workers;

• Provides liaison with the college administration, faculty, and staff regarding Health Services issues and concerns;

• Provides and/or organizes in-serve training for faculty and staff regarding the needs of students with  mental health issues;

• Serves as liaison to campus and/or community agencies, including referral to campus or community agencies and follow-up services;

• May represent the college in District and in State Health Services activities;

• May represent Health Services on campus and at District committee meetings;

• Keeps current with trends and developments in the field through appropriate literature, conferences, and other information sources;

• Performs other related duties as assigned by the college.

• Schedule may include evening or weekend hours as part of contract assignment.  Faculty are expected to use and keep abreast of advanced methods, including the use of current and future technologies, to support student learning and career objectives.

• Faculty are also responsible for providing a full professional service week that may include, but is not limited to:

• Maintenance of office hours;

• Performing departmental duties such as program and curriculum development, evaluation and revision, and selecting appropriate program materials, and working with administrators and other faculty to develop a comprehensive pre-collegiate program;

• Participation in professional activities such as departmental and campus committee work, faculty peer evaluations, staff meetings and participation in the governance structure of the College and District;

• Pursuing professional growth activities to remain current;

• Performing professional outreach activities (e.g., working with administrators and other faculty, as part of course development and depending on need, by participating in an industry advisory committee for a program, working with inter-segmental education partners—such as high school, adult school and other colleges—and industry partners to design and implement effective basic skills curricula and career pathways in the discipline, etc.); and

• Performing other related duties as assigned by the College.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Possession of a Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Marriage, Family and Child Counseling or Career Development;

AND

2. Possession of a current, valid California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Professional Clinical Counselor, or Psychologist. 

 

OR

3. May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community College Credential as a Mental Health Specialist/Counselor.

 (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).

or

4. The equivalent qualifications.

(Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as clear and reliable on the college transcripts as required on the District Equivalency Application Form.  Refer to the Equivalency Procedures below.  This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications.) 

5. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Doctorate (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or MSW.

• Experience in providing psychological services (individual and group) in college/university counseling center setting.

• Competency in group psychotherapy and outreach programming.

• Ability to interact effectively with students, administrators, faculty, and staff.

• Knowledge of the unique mental health issues of diverse clients, including individuals from ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds, individuals representing varying sexual orientations, and international students.

• The ability to deal with serious and sensitive issues in a highly confidential manner.

• The skills to build relationships and trust across a wide range of constituencies, including faculty, staff, students, and parents.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• A strong commitment to advancing diversity.

• The ability to work independently, and cooperatively as a member of a college team.

• Advanced knowledge and training in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. 

• Knowledge of the State of California Rules and Statutes.

• May be required to work evening and/or weekend hours for crisis response, appointments or special events.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

A selection committee will review and evaluate applications to select a limited number of candidates for interview.  Meeting minimum qualifications for a position does not assure the candidate an interview.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

Those candidates who are selected for an interview may be required to give a demonstration and submit training material (handouts) on a pre-assigned topic.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), tenure track position.  175 Contract Days Each Academic Year.  May include evening or weekend hours as part of contract assignment.  The annual salary range upon entry is $54,976- $74,251. Initial salary placement is commensurate with experience and educational background.
