The Department of Family Medicine (DFM), University of Washington has a unique opportunity to join our Research Section. We invite applications for assistant or associate professor rank to join an exciting and growing Research Section with long established successes in the areas of practice-based research, rural health, and health workforce. We also have considerable strengths in many other priority research areas such as integrated behavioral health, cancer detection, informatics, substance use disorder, women’s health, diagnostic testing and cardiovascular disease.

The successful applicant(s) will be on a full-time, 12-month appointment in either the clinician researcher (without tenure due to funding). The expected start date is July 1, 2021, or soon thereafter.

  1. Practice-based research. An opportunity exists to take a major role in the WWAMI regional Practice and Research Network (WPRN) and related practice-based research activities. The WPRN is a practice-based research network (PBRN) funded by the UW’s Institute for Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) that includes clinical sites across the 5 state WWAMI region. The WPRN facilitates diverse areas of research with investigators from multiple departments and institutions.
  2. Rural health research. The Department houses the WWAMI Rural Health Research Center (RHRC), which is funded by a multi-year cooperative agreement grant from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). RHRC’s multidisciplinary team conducts research around rural healthcare providers, rural access to home health care, and cancer screening and opioid use disorder.
  • Health workforce research. The Center for Health Workforce Studies (CHWS) includes two multi-year cooperative agreement grants from HRSA in the areas of allied health and health equity. CHWS conducts policy-relevant research on a wide spectrum of health professions including physicians, nurses, therapists, and the behavioral health workforce. CHWS multidisciplinary team collaborates with investigators across the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health.
  1. Clinical informatics and data science: Several investigators have research programs in areas of complex data sharing, machine learning / predictive analytics, natural language processing, and data visualization. Current research in this area is leveraging UW Medicine electronic medical records and regional and national data sharing networks, as well as a region-wide and national efforts aligned with the multiple institutions in the areas of practice improvement, integrated behavioral health care, health service disparities, COVID19 testing, cancer, diabetes, obesity, substance use, dementia, and complex patients with multiple chronic conditions.
  2. Primary Care Innovations. The Primary Care Innovation Lab (PCI-Lab) conducts research to develop and implement new technologies which have the potential to improve care in primary care and community settings. The majority of the research is currently focused on improving diagnosis and monitoring in areas such as respiratory tract infections, smartphone technologies, cancer detection, and blood pressure monitoring.

We seek individuals committed to collaborative and interdisciplinary research, which are crucially important in Family Medicine and to the success of our research enterprise. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability or promise to develop a record of outstanding research productivity, obtain external funding, and contribute to the Department’s mission to deliver high quality primary care. Successful candidates will be expected to generate external funding from grants and contracts as a principal investigator or co-investigator in collaboration with other investigators in the Department of Family Medicine, as well as other departments or Schools at UW to support the majority of their time.

Other duties expected of successful candidates include teaching and services aligned with the academic mission of University of Washington, commensurate with rank. Clinicians are expected to participate in clinical practice at UW Medicine clinical sites. For MD/DO/PA faculty, this would include outpatient family medicine, and if desired obstetrics and inpatient attending at the UWMC-Northwest Campus. For clinical psychology candidates, this would include practice within outpatient behavioral health at one of the UW Medicine Clinics and/or Harborview Medical Center Family Medicine Clinic.

Qualifications

Applicants are required to either have a) an MD, DO, or foreign equivalent with current certification by the American Board of Family Medicine, or b) a PA with current certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or c) PhD in clinical psychology (or other relevant clinical fields) from an accredited university.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduate of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

For MD/DO, PA or Clinical Psychology candidates, applicants must have a license or be license eligible in Washington State.
